Afterpay axes barcodes: The payment changes you need to know about

Afterpay is set to phase out barcodes for in-store payments by the end of September, but what's the catch?

Following the announcement of its NFC-enabled Afterpay Card earlier this year, buy now pay later giant Afterpay has revealed that barcodes will no longer be accepted as a way to pay in-store.

Several popular retailers, including Big W and David Jones, have already phased out the payment method, with other stores set to follow suit from 30 September.

Instead, customers will need to use the new Afterpay Card to complete their purchases in-store.

If you haven't already set up a card, you can do so by downloading the Afterpay app, visiting the "Card" tab and following the prompts to add it to your Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.

From there, you will be able to make purchases with Afterpay in-store by following the steps listed below.

How to use your Afterpay Card

  1. When you're ready to pay, open the Afterpay app to authorise Afterpay Card.
  2. Go to the "Card" tab and select "Pay in-store now".
  3. Tap to pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay.

While the changes are set to make in-store purchases easier for most customers, those without NFC-enabled devices will no longer be able to use Afterpay in-store.

These customers will need to switch to an NFC device to access the service or risk being limited to online transactions.

Afterpay has said that customers who have made Afterpay purchases in-store using barcodes prior to 30 September will still be able to make the associated repayments after this date.

The BNPL service is also set to update its Terms of Service in relation to how Afterpay works in-store from 30 September.
