What is the Finder Score?
The Finder Score ranks travel insurance policies based on their comprehensiveness.
We evaluate all of the travel insurance policies available in our database and give them a score out of 10. The higher the score, the more comprehensive the policy.
We've factored in the cover that would be important if something went wrong during your travels, such as cover for overseas emergency medical expenses, lost luggage, cancellations, personal liability, travel delays and more.

Why did we come up with the Finder Score?

To make comparing easy
Comparing travel insurance is hard work. We thought that there should be an easier and more objective way to make sense of all the options we compare.

Because price isn't everything
53% of Australians want travel insurance that offers a good balance of price and cover, according to a 2022 DFAT study. The Finder Score can help you do that.

Because we want to help
Finder is editorially independent. The Finder Rating is designed to help you make an informed decision and get better value for money.
Finder Scores: What they mean

If you want peace of mind, this level of cover will most likely give it to you. The most comprehensive level of cover with all the bells and whistles.

Cover that will get you out of trouble in most instances. These policies probably have less benefits included, and lower limits.

These policies will usually cover you for medical and cancellation at the least, which is what most people care about. Expect average cover and limits.

Most likely medical-only cover. If domestic, most likely only covering cancellation. Unexpected trip disruption and your belongings will likely not be covered.
How do we calculate the Finder Scores?
Brace yourself, here comes some maths:
A Finder Score is a number between 0.1 and 10 that expresses each policy's comprehensiveness. To get our rating, Finder's insurance team analysed 18 commonly covered benefits. This includes medical expenses, rearrangement costs for COVID 19, cancellation and luggage cover.
Each benefit is then given a percentage weighting. This is how we calculate the final score. Certain benefits are weighted higher than others based on what our insurance experts believe is more important. For example, cancellation cover makes up a larger proportion of the final score than say, dental expenses because it is a much more common reason for claims.
Keep in mind, the Finder travel insurance rating does not take price into account. It only looks at what's included in the policy itself. You can see how much a policy will cost for your next trip by using our travel insurance engine.
