Telstra switches on satellite text messaging – is your phone and plan eligible?

Telstra has finally launched Australia's first satellite to mobile text messaging service after months of trials, beating both Optus and Vodafone.
This will be a game changer for Aussies living in black spot zones or those travelling around the country.
If you end up outside of Telstra's network range, your smartphone will automatically try to seek a satellite connection, as long as there's a clear view of the sky.
This is possible following Telstra's partnership with SpaceX's Starlink, announced at the start of the year.
Are all Telstra mobile customers eligible for satellite messaging?
This feature is only available to Telstra customers on an Upfront mobile plan or to small business customers.
Here's a look at its month-to-month Upfront plans in case you want to sign up:
- Basic: $65 a month for 50GB (price goes up to $70 from 1 July)
- Essential: $75 a month for 180GB (price goes up to $80 from 1 July)
- Premium: $79 a month for 12 months for 300GB (ongoing price is $99)
Is my smartphone compatible?
For now, satellite messaging only works with Samsung Galaxy S25 models that have the latest software update.
It'll roll out to more devices in the coming weeks, including iPhones. Telstra will keep an updated list on its website.

What else do I need to know about Telstra's satellite messaging service?
Here's a general list of things to keep in mind:
- For now, you can only text with emojis. However, it's expected that in the future, it'll be able to support low-speed data use and calls.
- It's not designed to be used as an emergency service. You can't text Australian emergency responders directly.
- Since satellite-to-mobile relies on passing satellites, the connection can drop out briefly.
Both Optus and TPG/Vodafone are expected to launch similar services, but they're still in development.
