Applying for a business card

Before you apply for a business card, there are a few things you need to have in place.

We've used the American Express Platinum Business Card as an example for this list.

Most charge cards on the market will have similar terms and conditions, but it's always important to check them on an individual basis before you apply.

❑ Valid ABN – You can't get a business card if you don't yet have a formal business! So ensuring you have an ABN in place ahead of time is key. This is also an important part of distinguishing your business from a hobby, too.

❑ GST registration – Some business cards will require you to be registered for GST before you can apply for them. This demonstrates to the card provider that your company is likely generating above a certain amount of revenue (more on that in a sec) and is prepared for future growth.

❑ Minimum business income/turnover – To apply for a American Express Platinum Business Card, you must have annual business revenue of $75,000 or more.

❑ Good credit history – To qualify for most types of cards, business or otherwise, you'll generally need to have a good credit score. You can check your current credit score right here on Finder.

❑ Aged 18 years or over – Signing up for a business card is a form of contract, so you'll need to be over 18.

❑ Australian citizenship or permanent residency – To apply for a business card, you'll need to have Australian citizenship or permanent residency in Australia. You'll need to provide appropriate documentation for proof, too.
