3. Signing up before you turn 30
Opting to get health insurance at a younger age can be a financially beneficial decision in the long run. This is because it can help you avoid Lifetime Health Cover Loading, also known as LHC Loading.
Essentially, if you don't take out health insurance by the year you turn 31, the Australian government charges you 2% LHC loading in addition to your premium, for every year you're aged over 30.
Lifetime Health Cover loading is payable for 10 years of continuous cover before you will no longer have to pay this loading. And the cost can go up quite substantially over that time! Especially in comparison to someone who took out health insurance at a younger age.
So taking out health insurance early can lead to big savings in the long run.
4. Avoiding the Medicare surcharge
Did you know that signing up for private health insurance can actually reduce your tax obligations?
If you don't have private health insurance and earn over $94K (FY25) or $101K (FY26)**, then you will have to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS). Depending on how much you earn, this will be 1-1.5% of your income.
However, if you have private health insurance for hospital cover, you won't be required to pay this extra amount, or will receive a pro-rata reduction, depending on how long you've had it for in the last financial year.
So by signing up for a policy with a provider like Australian Unity before the end of the financial year, you can not only save on your policy costs but potentially save at tax time too!
