The Battery Rewards Plan makes it easy to turn your home battery excess into a source of smart savings. If you're eligible, it's one of the simplest ways to support the energy grid and get rewarded for doing it.

Let's take a closer look at the must-knows.

What is the Battery Rewards Plan?

The Battery Rewards Plan is a new energy offer designed specifically for battery customers that combines:

  • Low variable electricity rates for cloudy days when you may need to charge your battery from the grid.
  • Peak export windows (between 5pm and 9pm) where you earn Digital Prepaid Visa Cards for discharging excess energy back into the grid.

These rewards are additional to your existing feed-in tariff (FiT), meaning more you export, the more you earn, with rewards paid out quarterly.

Who is the Plan designed For?

The Battery Rewards Plan is for residential electricity customers in NSW, QLD, or SA.

If you've got a solar battery system and a smart meter installed, or you regularly have spare battery energy after covering household needs, you may be eligible.

What are the Benefits?

Peak export rewards – an enticing gift card rate of $10 per 1–50 kWh exported in the peak window. This is like getting around ~22-24c/kWh for peak exports when combined with AGL's current standard feed-in tariff (which ranges from 2-4c/kWh, depending on your state).
For example, by exporting 4kWh of excess battery energy consistently across the year during peak hours, you could earn $320 a year in Digital prepaid Visa credits.
But there are other perks, too:
  • Stay in control over your battery – you set your battery to charge and discharge as needed on AGL Battery Rewards Plan
  • Flexibility to use gift cards almost anywhere Visa is accepted, online or in-store.
  • Low variable electricity rates— helping you to stay cost-efficient even on cloudy or rainy days when solar generation is low.

How Do I Participate?

Getting started with AGL's Battery Rewards Plan is easy.

  1. Check your eligibility:
    • You must be a residential customer in NSW, QLD, or SA – Victoria is coming soon!
    • You need a working solar battery and a smart meter.
  2. Set up your battery for export:
    • Schedule your battery to export excess energy between 5pm and 9pm.
    • Most battery apps have automatic export scheduling and/or TOU tariff optimisation functionality.
    • Speak to your installer or battery manufacturer to get help setting up your battery to this plan. AGL also has a handy guide for setting up a few of the popular batteries.
  3. Monitor your exports:
    • If you have a battery app, use it to track how much energy you're exporting.
    • Ensure you have enough excess capacity in the evenings to participate.
  4. Receive your rewards:
    • At the end of each quarter, AGL calculates your eligible exports.
    • You'll receive your Digital Prepaid Visa Card via email and SMS, valid for 3 years.
