Europcar vs Sixt
We settle the score so you can spend more time planning your itinerary instead of comparing companies.
We’re reader-supported and may be paid when you visit links to partner sites. We don’t compare all products in the market, but we’re working on it!
We've all been there: procrastinating making that big travel booking in case a better price comes along or you find a feature that doesn't suit you. But honestly, booking that ride is an enormous relief.
To help get you sorted with either Europcar or Sixt we've laid all the important factors down – from cancellation policies to payment options – so you can stop thinking and get on with planning the rest of your trip.
TL;DR: Our verdict
While Europcar might be the bigger name with more premium vehicles in its suite, Sixt wins the battle in our eyes with its much more affordable hire costs, cheaper excess for large vehicles, fee-free cancellation policy and wider acceptance of cash as a payment option.

To settle the war between who is cheaper we searched like-for-like rentals on the official Sixt and Europcar websites. We searched for the same pick-up and drop-off locations, rental dates and aged driver (21+) and churned out a final cost.
In this search Sixt came out on top, saving you more than double with a Hyundai i20 for $139.69, including fees. You can reduce this even more by paying up-front. Both of the cheapest options offer unlimited mileage and an excess of $5,500 and vehicles that can fit two bags.
The biggest difference in the results is that Europcar's vehicle is a 5-door where Sixt's is only a 3-door. Europcar's vehicle is also manual while Sixt's is automatic.

What are the deals like?
Europcar's deals cover select locations, dates and vehicles, as well as early bookings. Deals can be discount based (eg 20% off the base rate) or based on the number of days hired (eg hire for 5+ days, get 15% off). It is also partnered with Virgin Velocity, allowing you to earn points for your hire.
Sixt's deals are a lot more specific and are mainly on particular vehicles (eg Suzuki Swift hires for $44 per day).
Here are some of the latest deals with both rental companies.
Europcar vs Sixt: Who won?
It's a tough call but we're giving this crown to Sixt. Not only are its rental costs half those of Europcar, it doesn't charge for cancellations, it more widely accepts cash as a payment and has better excess costs being a flat $5,500 across all its vehicles.
That's not to say Europcar doesn't have its benefits which could work for your needs. It is available in more locations worldwide, has a bigger suite of vehicles, including luxury vehicles, and charges less for additional drivers.
In summary, here's a list of both of their winning points:
- Offers a wider variety of vehicles, including luxury and premium cars
- Has a better additional driver fee price, starting at $7.32 per day and capped at 5 days
- Better variety of deals which are available across different locations, vehicle types and booked days
- Cheaper cost overall in a like-for-like search
- Overall cheaper excess if you're renting a larger vehicle
- Accepts cash as payment
- Cancellations and re-bookings are free
