The cost of living crisis has hit our shopping baskets hard, with rising prices for everything from fruit and veg to meat and even Vegemite.

But if you have a membership or service that offers discounted gift cards – such as NRMA, RACQ or RACV – you could use them to save around 3-4% on your shop.

Did you know?

Finder analysis shows we're spending an average of $185 a week on groceries in 2023. If you paid with gift cards offering a 4% discount, you'd save around $385 a year.

I've used this hack for years, thanks to benefits I get through an industry membership and a payroll software service. The discount offers sometimes change but I usually see Woolworths and Coles in the mix (or at least one of them).

Here's how to check if any of your memberships or service accounts offer discounts:

  1. Log in to the account
  2. Look for a "benefits" or "rewards" section

OR

  1. Search online with a phrase along the lines of "discounted gift cards + [brand or service you use]"

But even if you can't find any discounted gift cards, there are still plenty of ways you can save at the supermarket and beat inflation.
