Australians are still in love with SUVs
But passenger vehicles remain the most popular.
While passenger vehicles still account for the majority of new cars purchased in Australia, sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are trailing only slightly behind.
Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show Aussies bought 98,460 new cars in April 2016, a rise of 0.3% compared to March 2016.
Passenger vehicle sales totalled 40,871 for the month, a 0.1% increase on March 2016 figures, while SUV purchases were also up 0.1% to 36,131, month-on-month.
Other vehicles witnessed a 0.8% rise in month-on-month sales for April 2016 but this was down on the overall trend seen since October 2015.
In 2015 SUV sales accounted for 35.4% of the total market sales, marginally behind passenger vehicles at 44.6%.
Last month the ABS recorded the first decline (-0.1%) in month-on-month sales numbers for SUVs but April's figures show Aussies are still keen on buying the rugged motor vehicles.
Car buyers in the ACT were the most active in April, with sales up 1.8% month-on-month.
Queensland continued its downward purchasing trend, which began in November 2015, registering a -0.5% drop in sales month-on-month.
If you don't have the budget for a new car, then look at loans for used vehicles and compare low-interest car loans to find a better deal.
