How to protect yourself from travel trouble

Around 3.5 million Aussies have suffered a travel mishap in the last 12 months.

Nothing kills your holiday mood faster than an unexpected setback.

And with almost 1 in 3 Australians (28%) reporting they have suffered a travel mishap while abroad in the past year, there's a decent chance it could happen to you.

According to a new Finder survey, 14% of us have experienced travel delays in the past 12 months, while 8% have lost their possessions and a frightening 3% have ended up in hospital while abroad. That's more than 300,000 people ending up in hospital unexpectedly.

Gary Ross Hunter, travel insurance expert at Finder, says travel insurance costs should be part of every traveller's budget.

"No one thinks anything bad will happen to them, but the research shows travel mishaps are quite common.

"Travel insurance can help reimburse you for non-refundable parts of your trip or help you if you're injured or face an emergency."
