Gift cards are contentious. Some people think they're fabulous and flexible, others think they're a thoughtless present.

My tip? Skip the arguments, buy some gift cards for yourself, and save money in the process.

How does that work? Easy.

Supermarkets regularly sell gift cards at a discounted price - say, a $50 gift card for $45.

If you use those to pay for stuff you were planning to purchase anyway, you're getting an extra discount.

This week, both Woolworths and Coles have gift card offers.

Woolworths has 10% off Ultimate cards, while Coles is offering 15% off Active, Choice and Shop cards. (Both deals run until Tuesday 27 June.)

Let's assume you picked up 5 $50 cards at Coles (the maximum it allows) and the same at Woolworths.

You'd have $500 in spending money, but you'd only have paid $437.50 for it. That's a $62.50 saving.

Each card has different retailers that accept it, so make sure you pick one that aligns with future purchasing plans.

I'm keen on the Ultimate Home Card, which is accepted at JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks, and will pick up a few of those to pay for the home office printer I know I'll need to replace this year.

You might be thinking clothing, electronics or sporting goods. Regardless, you can effectively get yourself an additional 10% or 15% off when you make that purchase.

And when you pop into the supermarket to grab those gift cards, follow the rest of our tips to keep your regular grocery bill down.
