4 myths about travel insurance BUSTED!

If you're about to head overseas for the holidays, you want to make sure you've got the facts about travel insurance at hand.

👋 Hey there! We've partnered with Southern Cross Travel Insurance for this article. So we'll be using its travel insurance products as an example throughout. However, you should always do your own research. Make sure to read the PDS and TMD available on insurers' websites carefully before you sign up for any insurance product.

Myth #1: I can buy it when I arrive

The truth: Sometimes you can purchase travel insurance once you've already arrived. But you may be looking at an additional premium and you may not get your choice of insurer.

Aside from this, there can be certain benefits to buying travel insurance before you go. For example, there may be cover for costs incurred if you need to change or cancel your trip due to an unexpected event before you leave.

And at the moment, if you purchase travel insurance from Southern Cross Travel Insurance, you'll be entered in the draw to win $5,000 cash. And if you purchase your policy via Finder, you'll also receive an extra entry.

Myth #2: I only need it for overseas trips

The truth: Although you may not need travel insurance for medical expenses when you're travelling in your home country, it can still be handy.

After all, issues like missing bags or missed flights can still pop up when you're travelling domestically. So if you're travelling within Australia these holidays – particularly with valuable items or Christmas presents – it might be worth considering whether you want to get insured.

Buying cover for domestic travel can set you up to win, too.

For December and January, if you purchase from a range of Southern Cross Travel Insurance's policies, you'll be entered into a draw to win $5,000 cash. Purchase your policy via Finder and you'll get 2 entries into the draw.

Myth #3: It's just about healthcare

The truth: Although travel insurance can definitely come in handy if you get sick overseas, it has a range of other purposes too.

For example, travel insurance can help in a range of situations, including a loss of cash, missing personal documents, changed trip plans, flight cancellations, excess vehicle rental charges and personal liability.

So before you head off, have a think about what you might need protected while you're travelling.

Myth #4: Getting claims sorted is complex

The truth: This doesn't have to be the case! Many travel insurers provide 24/7 service, in order to let you lodge a claim any time of day or night. Additionally, online claims have become increasingly common, so you don't have to worry about being stuck on the phone over a fairly straightforward issue.

So before signing up for travel insurance, make sure you check their claims process.
