Gaming consoles: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S
Streaming media devices: Apple TV, Android TV, Google TV, Chromecast, Fetch TV, Telstra TV, Amazon Fire TV
Note: The dedicated Stan app for Windows PCs has been discontinued. Users can stream Stan via a web browser on their laptop or desktop. Downloads for offline viewing are available only on compatible iOS and Android mobile devices.
Best internet plans for Stan streaming
To enjoy Stan without buffering or interruptions, a reliable internet connection with adequate speed is essential. The recommended speed depends on the video quality you wish to stream. Most internet plans in Australia come with unlimited data, so focusing on speed is key.
Recommended NBN speeds for Stan:
Standard Definition (SD): A minimum download speed of 3 Mbps is recommended. NBN 25 (Basic II) plans are generally sufficient for single SD streams (NBN 12/Basic I plans were retired by NBN Co in 2024).
High Definition (HD): A minimum download speed of 5 Mbps is recommended. NBN 50 (Standard) plans are ideal for HD streaming, especially for households with multiple users.
Ultra High Definition (4K UHD): A minimum download speed of 15 Mbps is recommended. For optimal 4K streaming, particularly with other internet activity in your household, NBN 100 (Fast) plans or faster are highly recommended.
For households with 2-4 people frequently streaming Stan and other online activities, an NBN 100 plan typically provides a good balance of speed and value. If you have many devices or stream in 4K often, consider an NBN 250 or even NBN 1000 plan.
Stan review: What our experts think
Content can fluctuate wildly on Stan. As an Australia-only streamer, it is at the mercy of distribution deals from overseas studios. Sometimes it lucks out with shows like Hacks and Poker Face, but other times the shows do not hit the mark. There are some hidden gems in there if you look for them. Plus, Stan is good for a comfort binge of iconic shows. Stan's commitment to local content puts it a step above the international streamers though.
It has wide device availability, but the decision to discontinue the dedicated PC app remains a frustration for desktop viewers.
Its pricing puts it alongside other streaming services, so there is nothing to differentiate it there. Which means that it is totally down to content and what you want to watch.
If it was not for someone else I lived with paying for Stan or that it has been the home of Yellowstone in Australia, I think it is a service that can be foregone. Stan and BINGE sit at similar price points, but one of them tends to have more of the big shows that everyone wants to watch. I find a lot of popular titles on Stan are available on other services too.
I like that Stan has a very big focus on its interface for what is trending, new and what I am watching, rather than trying to force other content on me. I am yet to have any major performance issues with Stan, the app is reliable. I just tend to find I do not think it has as quality titles as other services and so much of it can be streamed elsewhere for cheaper.
We are deep now into the SVOD era, and when you jump from app to app - as I do regularly - they all appear to have been birthed by the same mother. Stan's user interface and feature offering does not stand out in any way, but it is just as serviceable and stable as its competitors.
When it comes to new and exclusive content, Stan is one of the better options on the market. Especially when it comes to TV, including stand-up comedy. But the algorithm does not do a good job of surfacing originals, and at a glance you would think the app was focused on its extensive legacy library.
Although it is worth pointing out, Stan is the only entertainment-focused app that still offers a very solid sport category as well.
I do worry about Stan's future as more content licensing agreements end - especially as the Yellowstone universe continues to expand on Paramount-owned platforms. But as it stands, the app offers solid content, with room for improvement.
The quality of your stream significantly impacts data usage. Stan automatically adjusts quality based on your internet speed, but you can manually set it in the app settings.
Low quality: Approximately 570MB per hour
Medium quality (SD): Approximately 1.13GB per hour
High definition (HD): Approximately 2.89GB per hour
Ultra high definition (4K): Approximately 7GB per hour
To change video quality settings, select the settings cog in the Stan app on your device and choose the video quality option. For the best quality, leave it on auto. If you need to save data, manually select low or medium. Stan also offers an offline mode for its Android and iOS apps, allowing you to download content and watch it later without an internet connection.
You can watch Stan on your television using a compatible mobile device with either Chromecast or Apple TV. Many smart TVs and gaming consoles also have a dedicated Stan app that you can download and use directly.
Yes, Stan provides parental controls. You can set up kids' profiles or apply restrictions by content classification to control what children can watch. A four-digit PIN is required to switch from a kid-friendly profile to an unrestricted one.
Log in to your Stan account via a web browser, go to the "Manage Account" tab, and you can create, edit or delete profiles there.
Unfortunately, Stan does not own all the content in its library. Content licensed from third parties can be removed when agreements end. Stan Originals should remain on the platform, but many other titles may leave without much notice.
Stan features "New Releases" and "Recently Added" categories within the app for easy browsing. You can also sign up for email newsletters to receive updates on new content.
To cancel your Stan subscription, visit the Stan website, log in, go to your account details and follow the cancellation prompts.
Stan accepts payments from Visa, Mastercard, American Express and PayPal. You enter your payment details when creating your account, and payment is automatically taken each month on your sign-up anniversary.
Yes, all Stan subscription plans offer an ad-free viewing experience.
Yes, you can download selected TV shows and movies on compatible iOS and Android mobile devices for offline viewing. The number of devices you can download to depends on your subscription plan.
When watching a video, look for a quality icon (often "HD" or a cog) in the bottom right corner of the screen. Clicking this allows you to toggle between available video qualities like HD and SD. If the icon is blue, HD is active; if white, it is SD.
If you are experiencing issues with Stan movies not playing on your NBN connection, first check your internet speed to ensure it meets the minimum recommendations for streaming. Stan adjusts quality based on connection speed, so a slow NBN connection may cause buffering or lower quality. If problems persist, contact your internet service provider or Stan customer support for further assistance.

Hi Anne,
Unfortunately Stan discontinued their Windows app for laptops and it currently doesn’t work. Stan says they’re “working on bringing back the Stan Windows App”, but this hasn’t happened recently. The only way you can watch Stan via your laptop is streaming on a web browser.
If you wanted to download Stan TV shows and movies to watch while travelling, you can only do this on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches (iOS version 11.0 and above) and Android mobile devices (version 4.4 and above). You can find more info here: https://help.stan.com.au/hc/en-us/articles/115003299247-Download-your-favourite-TV-Shows-and-Movies
Hope this helps.

Finder makes money from featured partners, but editorial opinions are our own.
Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
