Sustainability at Finder
Reducing the environmental impact of our business and helping our customers make greener decisions.
The climate crisis requires all businesses to take action. We have a responsibility to do our bit when it comes to this important work and that's why "sustainable impact" is a core pillar of our broader "Finder Impact" corporate social responsibility strategy.
At Finder, we take positive climate action both through how we operate as a business and through how we use our platform to influence our customers and partners. On this page we will outline some of the work we're doing in this space.
Reducing the environmental impact of our business
Here at Finder we take the environmental impact of our business operations very seriously. Each year we accurately measure the overall environmental impact of our business operations around the world and purchase carbon offsets to ensure we are 100% carbon neutral. We also have a number of other initiatives to reduce our overall environmental footprint which we highlight below.
Measuring our carbon footprint
As the saying goes "what's measured is managed" so in 2022 we worked with emissions experts Trace to do the most comprehensive carbon footprint analysis that we have ever done for our business globally.
This analysis showed that our total carbon footprint for the 12 months to 30 June 2022 was 1,113 tonnes of CO2e. This includes emissions associated with all of our offices around the world as well as the emissions which we have a little less control over like the energy used by our crew when working from home and emissions from the third-party suppliers needed to run a digital business like Finder. The chart breaks down our carbon footprint in more detail.
Offsetting 100% of our emissions globally
In 2022, we also made the decision to become 100% carbon neutral as a business by offsetting all of our emissions. Working with Trace, we purchased carbon credits from 6 different projects around the globe including the Coorong Lakes Biodiversity Conservation project and the Cool Fire Traditional Land Management project which are both in Australia. To further support our carbon neutral claims beyond these carbon credits, Trace also planted 6,458 trees in the Finder name. Our impact page on the Trace website provides more details on our carbon neutral status.
Creating a greener place to work
As a technology business, our offices contribute more to our environmental footprint than for many businesses. In our largest office in Sydney, we have launched a number of initiatives to reduce our impact. In 2019, we launched a new recycling strategy and now over 40% of our waste is being diverted from landfill. We also carefully align our environmental mission with the suppliers we choose for our office.
One example of this is Kua Coffee, which provides all of our caffeine needs. Not only does Kua deliver freshly roasted, ethically sourced coffee beans every fortnight but at the same time it also takes away the spent coffee that we've used. This coffee "waste" is then turned into other valuable products like coffee-based soap. A portion of all of Kua's profits is then donated to charities supporting people in the area where the coffee is grown.
Using our platform to promote greener decision making
With more than 15 million actions being taken through our platform a year we know that the biggest impact we can have on slowing down climate change is by influencing the decisions made on our platform. Particularly in high-emission sectors like energy, investments and banking. That's why we have launched initiatives to integrate sustainability thinking into every part of our platform.
Spotlighting sustainability excellence through the Finder Green Awards
Since its launch in 2020, the Finder Green Awards have been Finder's flagship on-site sustainability initiative. The goal with these awards is to find genuine sustainability leaders in a given sector so that our customers don't have to.
With environmental data often quite difficult to access or interpret for the general public, this submission-based program allows us to look behind the curtain at some of the brands that claim to be doing their bit for the environment. Our assessment looks at factors like greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy usage, waste management and a bunch of industry-specific criteria to find the sustainability leaders across a number of categories that we compare.
Now in its third year, the awards range from banking to telco to shopping. Once a winner has been selected, an icon identifying its sustainability credentials is then included on all pages on the Finder site where the brand is mentioned. This logo acts as a visual cue for excellence in sustainability. We also create bespoke pages for each category with a more detailed breakdown of the winner and finalists' sustainability work. We now have 21 categories in Australia and plan to launch the awards in more markets in the near future.
If you see a green awards logo on Finder or out in the wild, you can be sure that that brand is taking impressive steps to protect our planet.
Additional Finder Green content for shoppers that care
In Australia we have also launched Finder Green which is our dedicated sustainability content hub to bring together all of the sustainable content we have across all the topic areas we cover here at Finder. Whether you're crazy about climate or just getting into going green, our team of experts are from all different areas of Finder who are passionate about sustainability. We highlight the businesses, brands and products that can help you live a more sustainable life.
Our green hub features content series like Finder Green Fave which showcases our favourite sustainable products and Going Green which is a series of interviews where we speak directly to the people in Australia who are making the planet a priority.
