Can I get any financial benefits from taking out private health insurance?
If you take out hospital cover by 1 July following your 31st birthday, you can avoid Lifetime Health Cover Loading (which is also known as "LHC Loading").
Lifetime Health Cover Loading is a 2% loading charge added to your hospital premium. It's intended to encourage people to take out hospital cover earlier in life and to maintain it.
The loading is applied on top of your hospital premium for every year you are aged over 30, based on your age on 1 July prior to joining. The maximum LHC loading that anyone can pay is 70%. Increased premiums due to LHC loading stop after 10 years of continuous hospital cover.
That can lead to a big rise in costs for your health cover over that period!
Still not convinced it's worth it? Lets crunch some numbers and see how the LHC loading can impact your premium over the 10 year period.
At time of writing, Finder research suggests the average monthly cost in Australia for silver hospital cover is $153.47.
That's $1841.64 a year.
Add the 2% LHC Loading cost and you're looking at $1878.47.
Not a huge difference in isolation. But over the course of 10 years, you're looking at $2,244.94!
And that's not even considering the annual price increases on health insurance policies -- that figure is purely based on LHC Loading.
So as you can see, you can benefit from substantial cost savings over time if you take out health insurance at a younger age.
Can I get any tax benefits from taking out private health insurance?
Yes! Taking out private hospital cover may be able to reduce your tax obligations, no matter what age you are.
If you don't already have private hospital cover and you're earning over $105,000&, you'll need to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) on top of any other taxes, including the Medicare Levy.
MLS is a levy paid by Australian tax payers who do not have private hospital cover and who earn above a certain income. The surcharge aims to encourage individuals to take out private hospital cover, and where possible, to use the private system to reduce the demand on the public Medicare system. How much you'll need to pay is on a tiered system, usually 1-1.5% of your income.
So if you're single and earn& for example $125,000 a year, you'd be paying an additional 1.25% for the Medicare Levy Surcharge.
However if you shop around, often you can buy a basic level of cover for around the same price as (or even less than) the additional tax you might have to pay.
As an example if you purchase Corporate Basic Plus with Corporate Lite Extras with Australian Unity during the EOFY promotion, you'll pay $1,425.97 annually-, inclusive of the 10% promotional** offer. So private health insurance in some circumstances can be significantly cheaper than the Medicare Levy Surcharge.
Important: If you haven't had Hospital cover for the full period of the last financial year, you may be subject to MLS for that uninsured period.
Choosing a health insurance policy with a provider like Australian Unity before the end of FY25/26 can score you a discount and potentially save you on your tax, too.
