Stan is a local streaming service owned by Nine Entertainment. As an on-demand TV show and movie provider with a strong library and local production budget, it's one of Netflix's strongest competitors in Australia.
Stan has content broadcasting rights deals with a variety of producers like MGM and Lionsgate, but also suffered significant content losses with services like Paramount Plus and Disney Plus taking back shows they own. However, the streaming service now offers live sport and doubled down on original content to compensate.

What can I watch on Stan?
Stan has built out its library to now house 762 TV shows and 8,743 movies. There are obviously too many titles to list here, but we've got regularly updated lists for Stan's TV shows and Stan's movie selection.
One section where Stan excels is original content. The service kicked off local content production back in 2015 with its fly-on-the-wall buddy cop comedy No Activity, before bringing Wolf Creek's Mick Taylor to the small screen in 2016. More titles followed, including favourites like Bump, The Tourist and Black Snow.

Three Women - 16 February
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live - 26 February
Black Mafia Family (season 3) - 1 March

Are Stan and Stan Sport the same?
No. Stan is an entertainment streaming service. Meanwhile Stan Sport as its name suggests streams sports. For a month, Stan Sport is available as an add-on to a regular Stan subscription. You need to already have a Stan package to access Stan Sport. While Stan comes with a , STan Sport has no free trial.
Stan Sport offers live and on-demand coverage of a variety of rugby competitions. On top of that, Stan Sport also shows all of the tennis Grand Slams. You can also watch the UEFA Champions League and more UEFA comps, as well as motorsport such as Formula E, INDYCAR and the World Rally Championship.
Stan review 2023
Content can fluctuate wildly on Stan. As an Australia-only streamer, it's at the mercy of distribution deals from overseas studios. Sometimes it lucks out with shows like Hacks and Poker Face, but other times the shows don't hit the mark like Dangerous Liaisons. But there are some hidden gems in there if you look for them. Plus, Stan is good for a comfort binge of iconic shows. Stan's commitment to local content puts it a step above the international streamers though. It has a wide device availability, but a recent decision to discontinue a PC app with little notice personally cut down an option available for me to watch. Its pricing puts it alongside other streaming services, so there's nothing to differentiate it there. Which means that it's totally down to content and what you want to watch.
If it wasn't for someone else I lived with paying for Stan or that it's the only streamer with Yellowstone, I think it's a service that can be foregone. Stan and BINGE are priced the exact same, but one of them has every big show that everyone wants to watch and the other (Stan) sometimes has good series. I find a lot of popular titles on Stan are available on other services too. I like that Stan has a very big focus on its interface for what's trending, new and what I'm watching, rather than trying to force other content on me. I'm yet to have any major performance issues with Stan, the app is reliable. I just tend to find I don't think it has as quality titles as other services and so much of it can be streamed elsewhere for cheaper.
We're deep now into the SVOD era, and when you jump from app to app – as I do regularly – they all appear to have been birthed by the same mother. Stan's user interface and feature offering doesn't stand out in any way, but it's just as serviceable and stable as its competitors. When it comes to new and exclusive content, Stan is one of the better options on the market. Especially when it comes to TV, including stand-up comedy. But the AI doesn't do a good job of surfacing originals, and at a glance you'd think the app was focused on its extensive legacy library. Although it's worth pointing out, Stan is the only entertainment-focused app that still offers a very solid sport category as well. I do worry about Stan's future as more content licensing agreements end. For example, flagship series Yellowstone will surely end up on Paramount Plus. Especially given the aggressive pricing, especially if you want 4K. But as it stands, the app offers solid content, with room for improvement.
Stan has worked hard on delivering a comprehensive suite of devices that you can access its streaming service from, including smart TVs, gaming consoles, desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets. Here's the list of devices compatible with Stan:
The quality of your stream will significantly impact the amount of data you will use while streaming Stan. On a number of devices, Stan will actually let you manually set the quality of your connection via the app's settings, though Stan also automatically adjusts quality based on your internet connection's speed. If you want to know how much data you will use streaming Stan at the different quality settings, see below:
Low quality: Approximately 570MB per hour
Medium quality (SD): Approximately 1.13GB per hour
High definition (HD): Approximately 2.89GB per hour
Ultra high definition (4K): Approximately 7GB per hour
To change video quality settings, select the settings cog in the Stan app on your device of choice and select the video quality option. For the best possible quality for the connection speed, leave it on auto, but if you want to save your precious data, manually select low or medium.
It's important to note that even if you select the high setting, if your connection can't deliver HD, it will automatically drop the quality to try and keep the stream running rather than pause and buffer.
In March 2017, Stan launched an offline mode for its Android and iOS apps, which allows users to download TV shows and movies to watch later without a constant internet connection.
Once you begin to watch the video, click on the blue HD icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. This is a toggle switch for HD. When blue it means that HD has been activated and when white it means the content is being broadcast to you in SD.
Stan can stream to your television using a compatible mobile device and either Chromecast or Apple TV. It is also compatible with some brands of smart TVs and gaming consoles where you just need to download the app.
Yes, you can control what your children watch through Stan either by using your kids' profiles or by setting your own restrictions by classification.
You will need to log in to your Stan account and use the manage account tab on the right-hand side of the screen. Here you can create, edit and delete profiles.
Unfortunately, Stan doesn't own a lot of the content in its library. If it's listed as an original then it should stick around on Stan, but a lot of its library is made up of third party deals. Those deals can end at any time and means loads of titles can leave Stan.
Stan has a new releases category and a recently added category to browse when you are looking for something to watch. You can also sign up for the newsletter, which will email you the instant new content has been released.
Simply put, head to Stan's website, log-in head to account details and look to cancel. We have a step by step guide for cancelling Stan if you need help.
Stan accepts payments from Visa, Mastercard and American Express. You will input your card details when you create your account and a payment will automatically be taken from the card each month on the same day that you signed up.

Important information about this website
Finder makes money from featured partners, but editorial opinions are our own.
Finder is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stand by our editorial principles.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.
Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
Please read our website terms of use and privacy policy for more information about our services and our approach to privacy.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
