Households will face major changes to their gas pricing from today, 1 February. But the brunt of the impact will come during winter.

AGL, EnergyAustralia and Origin Energy are the 3 major retailers hiking up gas prices for energy customers.

Victorians will be impacted the worst as costs jump by almost 25%.

In monetary terms, yearly bills could go up by anywhere between $326 and $480 a year.

For other states such as New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, the price increase will be 5–9% or just under $100 for the year.

Finder has also been told that Alinta Energy will be changing its gas price in Victoria. Other providers will likely follow suit.

Gas price hikes to have the most impact in winter

You won't notice too much of a difference in your gas bill right away.

The major impact will come when households increase their gas usage. This is true during the winter months if you use gas religiously for heating.

That's when customers will need to be careful. We already saw how badly households were struggling during the colder months last year.

What to do if you've been impacted by the gas price rises

1. You'll need to actively compare gas plans to see if you can get cheaper rates.

You can use Finder's comparison engine to see which providers are offering cheaper rates based on your household usage.

Do this now and then monitor your bills each month or quarter. The best advice is to not set and forget about your energy plans.

2. Make lifestyle changes or hack your home to reduce gas usage.

There are a few things you can do:

  • Putting a time limit on your hot showers.
  • Using cold water to wash your clothes when possible.
  • Taking steps to get yourself winter-ready beforehand. This can be as simple as investing in warmer clothes while they're on discount during these hotter months.
  • Get your home winter-ready by installing heat-retaining blinds, using a door snake to protect your home from stray draughts or using weather-seal tape to keep the cold air out.
  • Upgrade to more efficient appliances that can save you money over the years to come. See if you're eligible for any government rebates or concessions to help with this.
  • Use the economy mode button on your dishwasher.

3. Take advantage of government rebates and concessions if you're having financial troubles.

Head to your state and see which one(s) you might be eligible for.

Amendment as of 8 February 2023: We've removed mentions of Kogan Energy and Dodo Energy no longer offering gas plans.
