Turn Around, Now Switch! finder.com.au’s Switching Day

Here at finder.com.au, we are passionate about getting the best deal possible. We all want to save our money and to help others do the same. With that in mind, we’ve started our own Switching Day!

The aim of the day was to get as many people as possible to at least consider changing their mobile phone or broadband plans or to compare the rates on their credit card or savings account. We thought we’d start in house first, the finance experts schooling the telco team and vice versa. What resulted was a fun filled, educational and profitable couple of hours.

We set up in our new office, we all huddled around to egg each other on - it can be scary signing up to a new bank, so having your own personal support team is fantastic, I highly recommend it - and we got down to the nitty gritty.

First up, Kelly thought about finally ditching Commbank for Bankwest - she signed up with the Commonwealth Bank way back in 1995 when they ran Dollarmites in primary schools. It became clear that her savings and transaction accounts she had enjoyed since kindergarten just weren’t matching up with what she could be getting elsewhere.

After answering a few basic questions and asking a fair few tricky ones herself, Kelly had signed up for a Bankwest Easy Transaction Account. After filling in the last bit of paperwork and stepping downstairs to hand it all in at the post office, Justin stepped up to take her place at the plate.

He was in a similar boat. His old savings account wasn’t cutting it anymore. Both he and Kelly will be proud owners of High Interest Savings Accounts once they’ve got their debit cards (you can choose your favourite from 6 colours with Bankwest!) in the mail. The finder.com.au team made sure to send both of them a reminder email to make sure they check back in when it’s time to set up the online savings account.

There were a few other takers, Sharon pulling out an impressive credit card statement for analysis. Although she didn’t end up switching, she did learn a great deal about the strengths and pitfalls of the card she was currently using.

The finance session rounded out with Isaiah switching his savings account over to Citibank in order to enjoy a lovely bump in his interest earnings and with both Claude and Marco getting their own accounts looked at.

Unfortunately, no one ported over their broadband or mobile phone plans - Justin was still under contract and Erin had a bundle deal going with Telstra. Even so, it was a great day for switching!
