What is School Entrepreneur of the Year?

School Entrepreneur of the Year is the most comprehensive entrepreneurship competition and training program for high school students in Australia. Finder has partnered with not-for-profit organisation Generation Entrepreneur to design and launch this initiative with the inaugural tournament taking place in 2021. We're now officially on the look out for Australia's most passionate, committed and proactive students to ultimately take the title of School Entrepreneur of the Year.

How is the tournament structured?

The tournament is structured into three rounds. The first round will involve a combination of school-based and virtual workshops around the country. Each of these workshops is effectively a mini business building competition where the students are taught how to brainstorm, research, design and pitch a business idea before they present their work to a panel of judges.

The best teams from these workshops will move into the second round of the tournament where they will be set new challenges and compete against teams from other schools. The top performers progress will then progress into the third and final around which is a residential weekend where the teams will have their ideas fully stress-tested before the inaugural School Entrepreneur of the Year is crowned at the end of the weekend.

How is Finder supporting this initiative?

Finder co-created this initiative with Generation Entrepreneur and has been involved at every stage of its development. We are supporting the program financially, primarily through the Finder Innovation Fund which offers scholarships to teams that would not have been able to participate otherwise. We are also offering significant in-kind support to Generation Entrepreneur with our crew acting as mentors for the students at every stage of the tournament whilst our senior leadership team will act as judges for the final rounds and mentors for the winners. Our PR, marketing and publishing teams are also supporting the Generation Entrepreneur in the background to make sure the tournament is a success.

Why is Finder supporting this program?

Finder was set-up by three Australian entrepreneurs that grew a simple website that compared credit cards into one of the most exciting and fastest growing fintechs in the world. There is no doubt that innovation is at the heart of our culture and everyone that works at Finder is challenged to think differently, challenge the status quo and go-live with ideas to see what works best.

We began our ongoing partnership with Generation Entrepreneur back in 2019 to take this innovative approach to business and share it with the next generation. Fast forward to today and we are excited to launch our biggest and boldest program to date. We hope to reach thousands of students through this program and, just maybe, we might help to inspire the entrepreneurs that go on to launch the next generation of successful Australian start-ups. Regardless, we know that all students that take part will gain real-world experience to help build skills in communication, critical thinking and collaboration.

Who won the School Entrepreneur of the Year in 2021?

Team DECK from Girraween High School in New South Wales won last year's competition by creating the concept of a digital platform that allows users to play and modify boardgames online in a way that creates value for all users through Web 3.0 decentralised technology.
