Netflix Australia vs Netflix US vs Stan vs Prime Video: TV shows compared

Cut through all the noise and use this list to find out which of these streaming video-on-demand (SVOD) services has your favourite TV show.

Looking for Stranger Things? Breaking Bad? No Activity? Whatever series captured your interest, odds are it's available on one of the many on-demand streaming services available here in Australia.

With so many different services to consider it can be tough to track down which one has snapped up the rights to your new-found obsession (or created it from scratch).

How many TV shows do Stan and Netflix have?

We've compared the TV show totals of the two biggest streaming services in Australia: Netflix Australia and Stan.

Follow the links below the graph for regularly updated lists of TV shows on Netflix and Stan.

Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. Three of the biggest shows on television right now aren't available on Netflix Australia... yet. It's easy to feel inconvenienced or even slightly ripped off when you consider the vast difference between Netflix US content and Netflix Australia content.

However, it is doing an outstanding job producing its own content. Imagine a world without Stranger Things? Or Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Netflix is also releasing locally produced originals, beginning with Tidelands.

Crownies is no longer available on Stan. Disappointing as this was the sole reason I signed up.

      Hi Laura,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

Sorry to hear about that. Crownies is still on our list for TV shows in Stan. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We’ll also have a look and check if it has been completely removed from Stan to make necessary updates on our page.

      Cheers,
      Rench

      Hi Fiona,

This is correct. Presto will stop streaming as of 31 January. We’d recommend moving over to Foxtel Play, Netflix and Stan.

      Thanks,
      Brodie

      Hi Margaret,

Generally, your billing cycle starts on the day you signed up. I would recommend getting in touch with Stan’s customer support to find out for sure.

      Cheers,
      Brodie

I know you cannot give me personal advice, but as I am a pensioner and not very savvy with technology etc I need to ask. My children bought me the converter to plug into my TV and allow me to watch Netflix, Stan or presto etc. I have no idea which company to choose as prices seem about the same. I don’t want to join up with a company and be disappointed, so would I be better to have the first month free trial as an indication of movies, etc available from each company. I have been told that netflix is the most popular, is this correct.

      Hi Robyn,

Netflix has the most customers and in a global sense has the largest content library. As you’ve noted, however, all three services offer trials of their services for a month; your best bet would be to trial them to see if one has more of the programs or movies you enjoy watching, as no one service has every available title, and you may find that Stan or Presto have more content you’ll actually want to watch.

      Regards,

      Alex

Can anyone advise which streaming service offers the most British content ?

    • finder Customer Care
      BrodieJanuary 4, 2016Staff

      Hi Bret,

Both Stan and Netflix have decent British selections, but Stan definitely seems to have more from the BBC. Netflix has a few standout British comedies, like The Office, The IT Crowd and even some quality drama, like Luther. However, Stan has a much wider selection of BBC drama and documentaries.

      Cheers,
      Brodie

      BrodieNovember 20, 2015Staff

      Hi Mark,

Borgen doesn’t seem to be available on either Stan, Presto or Netflix. However, you can catch episodes after broadcast on SBS on demands. Currently, episodes 8, 9, 10 and the start of season 2 are showing. Click here to visit SBS On Demand.

      Thanks,

      Brodie
