The titular catch-22 kicks in when Yossarian attempts to end his military service on the grounds of insanity: while he claims a person would have to be insane to fly such deadly missions, his desire for self-preservation is seen as the act of a sane man and thus contradicts his insanity plea. Needless to say, the grim comedy goes to some incredibly dark places.
