This week in streaming: American Gods and Australian conmen

Matt Sayer 11 March 2019 NEWS

From Old Gods to new blockbusters, this week is certified binge-worthy.

March continues to serve up a binge-watching banquet this week, with plenty of exciting additions joining Australian streaming catalogues.

Starting with Netflix, we get what might be the platform's most ambitious endeavour yet: an explosive action flick headlined by big-name Hollywood stars like Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac. Entitled Triple Frontier, the movie follows a group of five ex-Special-Forces soldiers teaming up to pull off a heist on a South American drug lord. When their simple plan goes awry, the five find themselves questioning their morals and values as well as their loyalty to each other.

Stan brings the action back home with the Australian mini-series House of Bond. While there are no 00 agents or shaken martinis to be found, there is plenty of high-stakes action in this dramatised retelling of the life of business tycoon Alan Bond. Bond's story is a complicated one, with an Australian of the Year award standing in stark contrast to the $1.2 billion he fraudulently obtained during the WA Inc scandals of the 80s.

If you find billionaire bigwigs a little hard to relate to, you might want to tune into Foxtel this week instead. The third season of Better Things makes its debut, plunging deeper into the challenges faced by a single mother raising three daughters in LA while at the same time trying to forge ahead with her career in acting. Created by and starring Pamela Adlon (the voice of Bobby in King of the Hill), the series tackles plenty of heady topics in its third season, from body image issues and menopause to the emotional strain of sending your kids off to college.

Prefer a little more fantasy in your dramas? Then Amazon Prime Video should be your destination de jour this week, as it's home to the second season of the spicy drama series American Gods. The series continues to explore the same narrative laid out in the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, with season two following protagonist Shadow Moon as he falls ever deeper into the conflict between the Old Gods and the New.

The folks over at SBS On Demand love their international dramas, and this week is no different. Nordic cinema is the focus with the second season of the crime drama series Trapped. Set in a small Icelandic town, the show sees local police attempting to solve a brutal murder at the same time a tumultuous storm wreaks havoc upon the hapless town.
