This week in streaming: Netflix plays The Good Cop and Foxtel explores A Very British Scandal

From political scandals to psychedelic drug trials to classic 90s video-game cartoons, there's no lack of variety in this week's streaming new releases.

The last few weeks have been fit to burst with top-tier new releases and long-awaited series returns, and there's a good chance many of them are still sitting in your to-watch list waiting to be binged on. Well, this week you may finally have the time to catch up on all those rainy-day TV shows and movies, as the line-up of new content hitting Australian streaming services is considerably slimmer than usual.

That's not to say the next seven days are entirely devoid of compelling new content. Netflix still has a few cards up its sleeves thanks to its continued dedication to original content. For fans of dark comedies there's Maniac, a mini-series starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill that sees the pair participate in an experimental drug trial that claims to provide a panacea for all mental health issues.

If you're in the mood for something a little lighter, The Good Cop offers a more-traditional odd-couple comedy about a by-the-books NYPD detective and his renegade ex-cop father stuck living together. Musician Josh Groban plays the upright son while Tony Danza assumes the role of his opinionated dad.

Outside Netflix, the well of fresh content starts to dry up a little. Stan's biggest addition this week is the 1993 animated series Double Dragon, based on the arcade game of the same name. Expect plenty of cheesy one-liners and a generous serving of 90s action sequences.

Over on Foxtel, meanwhile, all eyes are on the debut of A Very English Scandal, the British mini-series that explores the real-life Thorpe affair of the late 70s. Hugh Grant plays the lead role of Jeremy Thorpe, the head of the British Liberal Party struggling to hide his relationship with another man from his fellow Members of Parliament as well as the world at large. From bribery to attempted murder, the scandal gets increasingly heated until it ultimately leads to Thorpe's exit from British Parliament altogether.

Prefer something a little more family-friendly? Amazon Prime Video has you covered with the premiere of its original animated series Pete the Cat. Based on the popular series of children's books of the same name, the show uses music to teach the importance of stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing change. As an interesting side-note, Elvis Costello voices the character of Pete's dad.

SBS On Demand closes out this week's line-up on a completely different note with the release of Ku'Damm 56 and Ku'Damm 59. Both German mini-series centre on Caterina Schollack, a young mother running her own dance school in 1950s Berlin. On top of the challenges involved in running her own business, she must also deal with the difficulties of raising her three daughters, one of whom develops rebellious tendencies fuelled by the burgeoning rock-and-roll industry.
