Chris Jager

I recently learned the hard way that Black Friday deals don't last forever. Many stores extend the length of their sales, which can cause shopper hubris to set in. I had my eye on an instant camera which was 30% off. Like Homer Simpson trying to meet Mr T, I kept telling myself I'd buy it little later. Then the deal disappeared. The moral of the story is: grab it while it's cheap!
— Chris Jager, Finder shopping expert

Black Friday dates, origins and shopping tips

New to Black Friday? Here are the key things you need to know, including when it starts, how it works and what to expect from Cyber Monday.

    What is Black Friday?

    Black Friday shopping spree

Black Friday is a major global shopping event. Taking place annually on the first Friday after the US holiday Thanksgiving, the date originally became famous as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

As retailers noticed the spike in sales at this time, they began prominently advertising major sales, in turn leading to increased consumer demand. The cycle of savings has continued to make this event truly unmissable.

Now, you can expect the majority of your favourite retailers to offer deals of some kind during Black Friday and the surrounding weeks. Often, Black Friday brings the biggest discounts you'll see all year, and the event is in competition with Boxing Day as Australia's largest sales event.

When is Black Friday in 2024?

Black Friday officially kicks off at 12am on Friday 29 November 2024, but stacks of retailers will be starting their sales early.

For bricks-and-mortar Australian stores, the sales will start at the beginning of the day on Friday. Some retailers only run a single day of sales, but many now stretch their deals across the weekend and into Cyber Monday.

When is Cyber Monday 2024 in Australia?

Cyber Monday falls on 2 December 2024. Historically, this event has been about online-only deals. These days, both online-only and physical stores both often release additional deals purely for Cyber Monday.

Keen to shop international sales? Since the US is a day behind Australia, Black Friday occurs there on our Saturday. We recommend keeping an eye out for any incoming US deals that provide international shipping. Stores like YOOX and Net-a-Porter often feature discounts on pricey items and ship to Australia.

All in all this sale period is jam-packed with some pretty huge savings. You'll want to keep an eye out between 29 November and 2 December, with the majority of sales falling on the Friday and Monday.

Check out our complete Cyber Monday hub page to find out even more about this event.

Get Christmas sorted this Black Friday

    Black Friday Christmas

Simply put, Black Friday is an ideal opportunity to get your Christmas shopping done.

With savings available on just about every product category, you should have no trouble finding a discount on almost any prospective gift.

To effectively leverage Black Friday for Christmas, you'll first need to assemble your list of gifts. If you need to some help in this regard, check out our complete Christmas gift idea guide for 2024.

Then, simply keep track of Black Friday sales with Finder's ongoing coverage to find out the best places to score your perfect gifts at discount prices.

Alternatively, simply searching for a specific product on Black Friday itself is likely to bring forth some sizeable savings, depending on its popularity.

Why is it called Black Friday?

There are competing theories as to the origin of the term "Black Friday".

The term was used to describe an event known as the Panic of 1869, in which financiers Jay Gould and James Fisk bought up a large supply of gold in an attempt to corner the market. In response, president Ulysses S Grant instructed the treasury to release a huge quantity of gold, causing prices to drop by 18%. Gould, Fisk and other prominent Wall Street figures were ruined as a result.

Usage of the term resurfaced in the 1950s among police officers in the north-eastern United States. They used the phrase to describe the crowds, traffic congestion and other chaotic events that marked the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

A final theory is that the term refers to the sales event prompting companies to begin to operate at a profit, or "in the black".

How do Black Friday sales work?

Black Friday functions much like many other sales events. In some cases, you might need a specific discount code to enjoy a deal. You'll also see many other deals available outright, with no need to enter a code.

Retailers such as eBay and Amazon may offer superior deals for members of their subscriber programs (eBay Plus and Amazon Prime, respectively.)

If you haven't previously signed up for these programs, Black Friday is the perfect time to start up a free trial to secure seasonal savings.

Given how vast Black Friday deals can be, it's wise to go in prepared. Keep up with Finder's ongoing coverage of the event to ensure you're securing the top deals.

    Are Black Friday sales real?

As long as you stick to using trusted websites and stay on the lookout for potential scams, you can rest assured that Black Friday deals are real. Be vigilant when it comes to unknown retailers offering deals that seem too good to be true and unsolicited emails or other communications.

During last year's Black Friday sales season, the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) warned consumers to be aware of the threat of scams during Black Friday. The body advised consumers to research sellers and be suspicious of vendors asking for payment via bank transfer, gift cards or cryptocurrency.

Last year, Australian consumers lost over $8 million in online shopping scams.

Am I protected when I shop on Black Friday?

All purchases made online in Australia on Black Friday are covered under consumer protection legislation.

Anything you buy from a company online is subject to the protections offered under Australian Consumer Rights law.

Find out more about your basic rights as a consumer here. Some of your fundamental rights include the right to acceptable product quality and the right to purchase products that match descriptions supplied by the business.

Why do Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales matter for Australians?

    One simple reason: Savings.

A Finder survey of 1,054 Australians revealed that more Australians take part in Black Friday compared to Boxing Day. In 2022, a whopping 32% of surveyed shoppers said they planned to participate in Black Friday sales.

The average Australian is projected to spend $375 during the end-of-year sales season, for a total spend of $7.5 billion.

Not sure what you want to shop this Black Friday? Here are the product categories Australians are most excited to bargain hunt this sales season, per Finder's nationally-representative survey.

Black Friday tips and tricks: How to get the best Black Friday deals

    • Start checking early. Many retailers publish their deals before Black Friday, meaning you have time to compare your options and really find the best bargain. Take advantage of Finder's ongoing coverage so you're across all the best deals.
    • Compile a wish list. The Black Friday madness includes deals on all sorts of products. Get organised and create a wish list of items you really want, so you can focus your efforts. That also helps to stop you from over-spending.
    • Set your budget. With the cost of living an ongoing concern for almost all Australians, it's very important you set a reasonable budget and stick to it this Black Friday.
    • Stay social. Expect retailers to take to social media to inform customers of the latest sales. Follow big brand accounts and turn on notifications so you're immediately aware of their latest posts.
    • Shop around. Don't dive on the first deal you see. You might find a better offer elsewhere. For example, Apple is notorious for offering lacklustre Black Friday deals. Check out alternatives like eBay and Amazon for a bigger and better discount.
    • Look at historical pricing. Some retailers cynically "adjust" pricing a few weeks out from Black Friday to make it look like you're getting a better deal. If you have your eye on a partcular product, make a note of the street price at least 2 weeks before the sale starts. Price trackers like CamelCamelCamel can also help in this area.
    • Make sure the retailer ships to Australia. If you're choosing to buy from overseas, you can still access many Black Friday deals. If a store doesn't ship to Australian addresses, you can use services like Australia Post's ShopMate service, which provides you with a US postal address to get items shipped to, before delivering them to Australia.
    • Don't forget that electronics might not work. Tech items from overseas will have different power plugs and might not meet Australian safety standards. Imported mobile phones may not work with Australian networks. If you're unsure, stick with local retailers. And if you do buy from overseas, remember to factor in shipping costs.
    • Spreadsheets are your friend. If you're a truly dedicated shopper, consider setting up a spreadsheet tracking the price of any products you have your eye on. Simply enter the pre-sale price of a product and compare it to any deals you come across. It might seem extra, but come 29 November you'll be glad you put in the work.
    • Get your accounts in order. Black Friday deals can sell out in a flash, so now's the time to ensure you have an account created with any retailers you plan to shop with. This will ensure you can breeze through the checkout process.

    Black Friday vs Cyber Monday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are two of the biggest sale events of the year. This year, Black Friday is on Friday 29 November and Cyber Monday will be on Monday 2 December.

When these two sale events started, they had a clear differentiation. Black Friday was predominantly held in-store and Cyber Monday was all about online sales. Now, Black Friday sales are now both in-store and online, and some physical stores run Cyber Monday sales too. But which day has better discounts?

This very much varies depending on the retailer. If you wait to get a better deal on Cyber Monday then that could lead to bigger savings, but you also run the risk of the hot-ticket items selling out.

If you're shopping for tech items, you're probably better off doing most of your shopping on Black Friday. Tech is one of the most popular shopping categories during this day and products tend to sell out. Fashion and beauty sales often continue over the weekend but if there are any cult brands you're after like Nike or Wrangler then buy them early.

Our suggestion? If you see a Black Friday deal that's a good saving and has your product in stock, we'd buy it then and there. Lots and lots of Australians are now shopping during this sale period between 29 November to 2 December so you won't want to miss out.
