How do I perform a dog DNA test?

To perform a dog DNA test, all you have to do is take a swab of saliva from the inside of their cheek. After that, instructions will usually direct you to allow the swab to dry before sealing it up in a bag or tube and sending it off for analysis.

Note: Directions will vary from one brand to the next. Always ensure you read these in detail before completing the test.

How does DNA testing for dogs work?

DNA testing for your canine involves an in-depth look at your dog's genetic makeup. The test searches for markers in their DNA that are then compared against a database of DNA taken from a collection of ascertained pedigrees.

Similarly to us, dogs often find themselves victims of genetic disorders. With DNA testing, you can screen for common genetic conditions your pet has the potential to encounter while learning what early warning signs to watch out for. But the benefits don't stop there.

By getting a DNA test for your family dog, you can also ensure that you are aware of any specific traits, needs or allergies that may require special attention. Needless to say, DNA testing for dogs is proving extremely popular with dog owners.

How much does DNA testing for dogs cost?

Typically, DNA tests for dogs range from $80 to $260. The price you'll pay depends on what you want to learn about your pet. Some tests will only include breed identification, whereas others also include a more detailed analysis including health risks, breed traits and more.

I found two reviews on Product Review that state Wisdom Panel will not accept swabs from DNA kits bought on Amazon and there is no facility for refund. I suggest this be fact checked further and removed as a recommendation from this page.

Hi Lou, sorry this happened to you. We are unfortunately unable to vet (pun unintended) every DNA product on Amazon and eBay as there are hundreds of different sellers. As with any marketplace, it’s important to research third-party sellers prior to making a purchase.
