Free shipping to Australia for online shopping

Shopping online is that much better when you don’t have to pay for shipping.

We’re reader-supported and may be paid when you visit links to partner sites. We don’t compare all products in the market, but we’re working on it!

Nothing completes an online sale faster than seeing the words ‘free shipping’. One of the biggest advantages of online shopping is the convenience, so it’s a bonus when that convenience doesn’t come with costs you wouldn’t have to pay while shopping at a store - namely delivery costs.

Free shipping with promo codes

Promo codes are a great way to score free shipping. Browse through our deals pages for the latest free shipping codes. If you always use a particular retailer not on our list it’s a good idea to sign up for their newsletter, as these regularly contain free shipping promotion codes.

Some sites, such as The Iconic, will only offer free shipping with purchases over a certain amount, while other sites, like ASOS, will offer free shipping on any purchase. You can often find coupon codes for free express shipping.

What is free shipping?

Sending anything comes with a cost, especially when you’re sending something overseas and especially if that something is travelling to Australia. Usually, a retailer won’t offer free shipping or won’t be able to absorb the associated costs, so you’ll need to pay the delivery fee. Delivery fees can vary according to how heavy the item is, where it’s coming from and how quickly you need it.

Many online retailers now offer free shipping on items bought through their stores. These can be offered in a range of different ways, some designed to encourage you to spend more and others designed to get you coming back. Read on to learn more about the most common ways you’ll find free shipping online.

How does it work?

Free shipping

Below are the most commonly found free shipping offers on the internet.

Free shipping on all orders

These retailers offer free shipping on all orders made through them. Generally speaking this will be through regular couriers or mail services, with optional express postage services attracting fees.

Retailers like Book Depository, ASOS, Beginning Boutique and SurfStitch offer free shipping to Australian locations on most orders.

Free shipping on orders over a certain value

Many retailers employ a free shipping offer when you spend over a certain amount of money. Retailers like The Iconic will give you free shipping for purchases of over $50, whereas other retailers may set a higher purchase value of $100.

Free shipping on selected products

As part of temporary promotions some online stores will give you free shipping on a specific range of items. This is offered as an incentive for increased sales.

Considerations for free shipping

Free shipping considerations

One key thing to remember here is that shipping is never free to retailers. They may try to raise the price of the item to cover the cost of including free shipping, so ensure that the price of the item you’re buying isn’t inflated and carry out a comparison on similar sites first.

Ask why a certain range of products has free shipping offered on it. Is it an inferior product which isn’t selling well? Do some research on any products you’re not sure about before you buy them.

If you log online to buy something don’t be lured into extra purchases just to get free shipping unless your order would cost more without qualifying for free shipping.

For example if a store has free shipping for purchases of over $100 and you have an order of $85, do some maths. If shipping is $20, this will come to a total cost of $105. If you instead find some items and add them to your cart until it reaches $100 worth of value you’ll not only save $5 but get an extra or better item.

Last but not least, know that many websites that offer free shipping may not in fact offer this to Australian buyers. Australia is an expensive place to ship to, so the retailers who offer free shipping usually include only the country they’re located in. There are some exceptions to this, so seek them out.

Pros and cons of free shipping

  • You don’t pay extra for your item, so you get a further saving especially when buying items from overseas
  • Some retailers offer free express shipping, so you’ll get your items for free and quickly

  • Items may be inflated in price because of the free shipping
  • Conditional free shipping may encourage you to spend more

FAQ on free shipping

How long does free shipping take?

This depends on where the item is being shipping from and the shipping service used. Items being sent from Australia using Australia Post shouldn’t take more than a week, but will usually arrive earlier. For items coming from overseas check the estimated time from your retailer.

Will I get tracking with my order?

Again this depends on the retailer. Some retailers will offer tracking on their free shipping, whereas others will require you to pay extra for registering your order first.

What if I’m not home when my parcel arrives?

Depending on the shipping service they may either leave the package at your door or leave a card. If you receive a card you’ll either have to pick up the package from your nearest post office or organise another time for the courier to bring the package to your home. One way to get around this is by having the package delivered to your work, or alternatively some retailers allow you to specify that you want the package delivered and left at your doorstep.

Will my order be delivered on public holidays?

Generally speaking no packages will be delivered on weekends or public holidays. Take into account too that the number of days a retailer will quote to send an item to you will not take into account weekends or public holidays.

      Hi Jannie,

      Thanks for your question.

Some of our retailers offer a pick-up option where you can visit their store and pick up your items. Otherwise, the items will be sent to your selected address.
