The AFL has often experimented with its pre-season format and that will continue heading into the 2021 campaign. Original plans for each team to play two games has been cut in half due to coronavirus protocols.

The schedule was also shuffled from an initial plan. Some teams were travelling interstate before a late call for all 18 sides to remain in their home states for their sole pre-season fixture.

The rule experimentations of the past have also largely been dismissed again this year. Gimmicks like super goals won't be used and matches will follow standard premiership rules.
