How far back do ancestry DNA tests go?
Autosomal DNA testing can trace your family origins back by up to 1,000 years. Y-DNA and mtDNA testing can take you back even further than this
Y-DNA traces a direct line of paternal ancestors and has the potential to reach back as far as 60,000–100,000 years. The catch? Only males can be tested using this method.
mtDNA testing traces a direct line of your maternal ancestors. This type of testing has the potential to reach back as far as 100,000–200,000 years and, as mitochondrial DNA is passed on by mothers to all of their children, it is available for both male and female test subjects.
Note: Both mtDNA and Y-DNA testing only have the potential to reach your direct ancestry lines and will only include about 1% of your family tree.
