Established way back in 1998, Scorpion Technology Computers – better known simply as Scorptec – began as a predominantly online-only retailer of specialty computer products to small businesses and technology enthusiasts. In the years since, the Melbourne-based company has expanded its operations to include physical retail stores in addition to its online storefront, setting up shop in Rowville, South Melbourne and Sydney.
As its name suggests, Scorptec's primary business is the sale of computers and computer parts. This includes pre-built systems as well as individual components like graphics cards, motherboards, CPUs and peripherals. Additionally, Scorptec offers a wide range of general electronics and consumer technology not necessarily related to computers at all.
Most of Scorptec's catalogue can be divided into the following categories:
Yes, Scorptec operates four retail stores where you can walk in and make purchases rather than ordering online:
All four stores operate on the same trading hours, with doors open from 9:00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday and 10:00am to 3:00pm on Saturdays.
Scorptec uses Australia Post eParcel and StarTrack courier services to deliver orders across the country. Each service is subject to limitations: Australia Post eParcel orders can't weigh any more than 22kg or exceed a maximum dimension of 0.25 cubic metres, while courier deliveries cannot be made to PO Box or Parcel Locker addresses.
Delivery costs are calculated based on a number of different factors, including the size and weight of your order, where you live and which shipping option you choose. Depending on these factors, you can pay anywhere from $11 for an eParcel delivery and $13 for a courier delivery up to $50 if you're couriering a pre-built PC.
There are two phases involved in Scorptec's delivery process. First, an order must be cleared for dispatch from Scorptec, which can happen as quickly as the same day if you place an order before 1:00pm and the product is in stock. Otherwise, your order will be dispatched once stock is available and payment has cleared.
After your order has been dispatched, delivery time is determined by your chosen shipping method and address. For Australia Post eParcel deliveries, typical shipping time is between two and six business days to metro addresses Australia-wide. Country addresses may take longer depending on the availability of local delivery services.
For courier deliveries, Scorptec most commonly uses StarTrack. As a general guide, here are the delivery times you can expect when shipping via StarTrack:
Yes. If you live within range of one of Scorptec's retail stores, you can choose to collect your order during trading hours instead of paying for delivery. You can also choose to pay in-store instead of online, if you so choose. Regardless of payment method, you'll need to present your driver's licence to confirm your identity before collecting your order.
Should you receive a faulty or misrepresented product from Scorptec, you can lodge a warranty claim using Scorptec's online form to seek repairs, replacement or a refund.
After filling out all the necessary details, you can either bring the faulty product back to any Scorptec retail store in-person or have it shipped. If you choose the shipping option and your order was also initially shipped to you, Scorptec will cover the delivery costs in the form of a paid consignment note. Just bear in mind that if Scorptec determines the product isn't actually faulty, you'll have to cover those shipping costs.
Once Scorptec has received your faulty product, it will begin assessing the nature of the fault and verify that it was not caused by improper use. This process can take between two and four weeks depending on the product in question. Assuming the assessment lines up with your claim, Scorptec will then offer repairs, a replacement or a refund.
Scorptec does permit returns for functioning items in the event you change your mind, but only in the following situations:
Be aware that Scorptec will not cover any shipping costs involved in returning functioning items based on change of mind.
In some instances, Scorptec will accept returns that do not fulfil these criteria, but this is decided purely on a case-by-case basis. If Scorptec accepts a return outside the above conditions, you'll have to pay a restocking fee equal to 15% of the product's value.
Scorptec does not currently ship orders outside Australia.
While online customer reviews don't tell the complete story of what people think about a particular retailer – people are generally more likely to leave feedback after a bad experience than a positive one, for instance – they are still useful for getting a general sense of that retailer's reputation.
For Scorptec, we've gathered customer feedback from a number of online sources to help inform your buying decision:
