Find out where the 2 Australian favourites placed this year.

Airlines across the globe were put through the wringer in 2020, but that didn't stop them from continuing the quest for innovation.

The verdict is officially in for this year's AirlineRatings.com awards, and the top spot goes to Qatar Airways. The airline has its cabin innovation, passenger service and commitment to operation during COVID-19 to thank.

Air New Zealand relinquishes its 2020 crown as it takes 2nd place for industry leadership and constant innovation. Singapore Airlines follows closely behind in 3rd for excelling in technology and in-flight products.

Australia's flying kangaroo, Qantas, scores 4th place, on account of its outstanding safety record and fiscal performance during the challenges of COVID-19 in 2020.

Virgin Australia also makes the cut in 18th place, beating out Delta Air Lines and Etihad Airways.

To be awarded a place in the top 20, airlines must have a 7-star safety rating and be a leader in innovation for passenger comfort.

Geoffrey Thomas, AirlineRatings.com editor in chief said, "We are focused on leadership and airlines that innovate to make a real difference to the passenger experience."

"In our evaluation, we also consider the audited feedback from passengers on our website."
