World of Tanks is enlisting strongmen to pull a real-life tank with their bare hands

What better way to celebrate your game than by dragging an eight-tonne hunk of metal across the ground?

The hugely-popular online tank combat game World of Tanks is no stranger to breaking world records. Back in 2011, the game set the Guinness World Record for "Most Players Online Simultaneously on one MOG Server" by hosting a total of 91,311 players on its Russian server, only to break its own record with a staggering 305,000 simultaneous players on its European servers in 2012.

Not content with merely holding records in the digital space, World of Tanks developer Wargaming has decided to attempt a real-life Guinness World Record right here in Australia. To celebrate the upcoming 1.0 update to World of Tanks, the developer has partnered with Arnold Schwarzenegger's Arnold Pro Strongman Australia event and tasked thirteen of the strongest athletes from across Australia, New Zealand and the world to see how fast they can pull a tank ten metres using nothing but the muscles on their finely-honed bodies.

The tank, an FV102 Striker, weighs a staggering 8 tonnes and represents the first time such a massive vehicle has featured in an Arnold Sports Festival event.

"We have had truck pull events in the past, but this is the first ever tank pull event, so it will certainly be one to watch," said Tony Doherty, Arnold Schwarzenegger's business partner and the organiser of the festival. "Our professional strongman competitors are now gunning not only for the Arnold Pro Strongman Australia title, but they also want the tank pull GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title."

The Arnold Pro Strongman Australia event kicks off at the Melbourne Convention Centre this Friday, 16 March and runs through to Sunday 18 March. The tank pull itself will be the fourth of the six events taking place over the course of the event, and is scheduled for 12:00pm on Saturday 17 March.

If you're keen on seeing the sweaty record attempt in person, you can purchase tickets from the Arnold Sports Festival website. Alternatively, the record attempt will be live-streamed on the festival site as well as on the World of Tanks' Facebook page.
