Thanks to the hair experts, we've found out exactly why blonde hair can look brassy. Here's what you need to know!

Do blondes have more fun? Who knows?! Something we're sure of is there's no better feeling than coming out of the salon with a fabulous, ashy-toned, blonde hairdo. But a few weeks and a handful of washes later, you start to see shades of yellow running through your hair. Is there anything worse than when your fab platinum blonde turns yellow? The horror!
You may feel like blaming the salon straightaway but this situation doesn't actually have too much to do with your hairdresser: blonde hair goes brassy because of what happens after you leave the salon. Not that it's your fault either, but these are the facts you need to know.
Why does blonde hair go brassy?
When you dye your hair platinum blonde, all the warmth is bleached out of your natural locks, but bleach doesn't last forever. Blonde hair can eventually look brassy. It's usually a golden yellow or orange colour. Why does this happen?
Turns out, blonde hair is incredibly porous, which means it soaks up everything. This includes chlorine, air pollution, minerals in your shower and unfortunately, hair products. Over time, all the products we use on our hair can start to build up and be absorbed into our strands. It can start to eventually weigh down and it could also alter the colour and tone of our hair.
Celebrity hairstylist and hair expert Lisa Laudat explains why this happens: "Generally speaking, blondes tend to use more products and treatments in order to maintain their hair colour, however this can mean that they are prone to developing a build-up of product on the hair over time, which in turn can make hair become weighed down and dull."
"Up keeping perfect blonde hair can be tough on holiday, the sun actually causes blonde hair to go brassy and we all know the effect chlorine can have," Laudat says.
Since you can't avoid all air pollution, swear off hair products and give up your summer swims in the pool, prevention isn't the key here. You still need to live your life.
Laudat explains that in this situation, a cure is the best cure: "You need products that will help your hair against all these harmful elements."
How to stop blonde hair from looking brassy?
Stopping your blonde locks from looking brassy is a challenge. Avoiding environmental factors like air pollution or the sun isn't maintainable and investing in a shower filter can sound a little excessive.
That's why it's popular among blondes to head off to the salon every few weeks to tone their hair. A salon tone can eliminate brassy tones and make your locks look shiny, but it only lasts a few weeks. Which means you have to go back again and again. Which isn't exactly affordable for most.
Fortunately for us, haircare companies are listening. There are loads of great products out there for blondes looking to keep their hair ashy. Purple shampoos are one of the most popular. Since purple is on the opposite side of the colour spectrum to brass, it cancels out any unwanted yellowness so you can get back to rocking a cool-toned blonde hairdo in no time. Many of the top haircare brands have actually managed to bottle this purple salon-toning-experience for you to use at home, minus the fabulous head massage.
Toning products like purple shampoos aren't exactly new. Brands like Fanola and John Freida have been crafting purple shampoos for years, but the formulations have never been better and there have never been more options available for blondes to use at home. It's not just shampoo anymore, we're now seeing toning conditioners, leave-in products and even masks. Laudat has a favourite, the PRO:VOKE Touch of Silver Toning Treatment Mask.
"I love the fact that this PRO:VOKE Touch Of Silver Toning Treatment Mask is a two in one product – it instantly tones colour as well as nourishing the hair. The formula is deep purple hair mask with a mix of active ingredients," Laudat says.
This one also works to prevent future brassiness by treating and nourishing the hair, so it doesn't soak up all the environmental pollutants as quickly.
"PRO:VOKE's mask delivers a luxurious conditioning treatment to damaged and over-processed hair without giving hair that heaviness that you can sometimes get with conditioning treatments," Laudat says.
It's nice to know you can do your toning and your hair mask all in one – gotta love a double-duty product. Laudat's pick, the PRO:VOKE Touch of Silver Toning Treatment Mask retails for $12.99 and can be purchased from Coles, Chemist Warehouse and Priceline.
