Dubbed a Yellowstone origin story, 1883 takes us back in time to when the Duttons first left their home and embarked on a journey west, looking to improve their lives. It's set before they settled down in Montana and established the cattle ranch we're already familiar with from Yellowstone.
With an exciting cast and a wild trailer, 1883 has all the ingredients of an explosive hit. If you're a fan of shows set in the Wild West or would want to learn more about the Dutton family history, the new show is must-watch TV.
Why isn't 1883 on Stan?
1883 is a Paramount Plus original production, so that's the only place where it's available to stream – at least right now.
Yellowstone also airs on Paramount Network in the US. However, the original premiered in 2018, before Paramount Plus launched. As a result, it was licensed to various streaming services, like Stan in Australia.
Given the launch of Paramount Plus, there's a good chance Yellowstone will eventually move here as well, though we don't have any details on the specifics.
Do you need to watch Yellowstone before 1883?
Not really. The prequel is set more than a century before the events of Yellowstone and it can be enjoyed as a standalone story.
That being said, if you're a fan of Yellowstone there's a very good chance you'll like 1883 – and vice versa.
The next instalment of the Dutton family origin story introduces a new generation of Duttons led by patriarch Jacob (Harrison Ford) and matriarch Cara (Helen Mirren). The series explores the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home. 1923 is available to watch on Paramount Plus and you can read our full guide to watching it here.
