Written by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective is a new take on an American anthology crime drama.

Cut between the investigation in 1995 to the case's re-opening in 2012, the show's narrative unfolds through the two distinct time periods. These timelines are interwoven as the case's detectives − now-retired Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) − describe in real-time the harrowing investigation that altered their lives forever.

Season 2 doubled down on the heavy and somewhat cryptic dialogue but this time around it was a little harder to chew despite the efforts of its all-star cast that included Colin Farrel, Rachel McAdams and Vince Vaughan.

Season 3 started in 2019 and is widely considered a return to form with Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali leading the cast.
