The Vow centres on the NXIVM, a self-improvement group and multi-level marketing company that disintegrated when criminal charges were brought against its highest members, including leader Keith Raniere. Widely described as a cult, it made headlines when higher-ups were charged with sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy.

At times difficult to watch, the docu-series takes a deep look at the experiences of many of the group's participants, spotlighting their desire for personal growth and their internal conflicts over events as they unfolded. Insightful and compelling, The Vow is a slow burn, but that's not a bad thing. Quite the contrary, as it enables viewers to better understand how cults like this can flourish in today's improvement-obsessed climate.
