The Undoing review

Finder attended the virtual premiere of The Undoing where we were able to watch the first two episodes in full. We've put down our thoughts below, but fear not, we've ensured that there aren't any spoilers.

This polished miniseries marks a new collaboration between creator David E. Kelley and Nicole Kidman, who previously worked together on Big Little Lies. Comparisons between the two titles seem inevitable. They both feature rich people living glamorous lives, with secrets lurking just under the surface. The pilot even involves a fancy private school, an elaborate party and a group of gossipy mums.

However, based on the first two episodes that we watched for review, The Undoing veers more in the direction of a whodunit thriller rather than that of a juicy drama rich in social commentary. Depending on your personal taste, this will either be a positive thing or a letdown.

What The Undoing may lack in subtlety, it makes up for in twists. While the first episode is slow and sumptuous, the second picks up the speed and cranks up the suspense, making you wonder whether any of your assumptions about the main players are right.

Kidman and Grant play Grace and Jonathan, a successful married couple living among New York's elite. After a gruesome murder rocks their community and Grace realises that her husband has disappeared, she's left wondering just how much of her marriage has been a lie. Not only that, but as a therapist who dispenses harsh truths about her patients' relationships, finding out there's something she's missed inside her own home comes as an unpleasant surprise.

The show's strongest asset is without a doubt the terrific ensemble cast. Nicole Kidman offers a moving performance as a woman struggling to accept that her immaculate life is falling apart. Hugh Grant proves that his famous charm can turn menacing in a beat. Donald Sutherland, who plays Grace's father, only has to show up to infuse a scene with gravitas. If he talks down to someone, even better.

The supporting players deserve a shout-out as well. Matilda De Angelis offers a great turn as a woman who seems fascinated with Grace, Noah Jupe proves that he is a rising star as the couple's son, and Édgar Ramírez makes a great detective. There's enough star power here to make you want to come back for more.

Additionally, the show has excellent production value. New York looks gorgeous, reminding viewers of a time when going for a contemplative walk didn't require wearing a mask and when hitting the gym was an anxiety-free activity. Nicole Kidman wears a coat that would make Olivia Pope envious. The couple's home is tastefully decorated, but still looks lived in.
We hope The Undoing doesn't lose steam later on. Based on what we've seen so far, we're dying to see more.
