The title of the anthology is derived from the African proverb "If you are the big tree, we are the small axe". Meant as a celebration of Black joy, beauty, love, friendship, family, music and even food, each film chronicles hard-won successes and offers a sense of hope.

Mangrove, the first of the five films, centres on the highly publicised 1970 trial against the "Mangrove Nine" following their wrongful arrest for inciting a riot in a reign of racist terror. The cast includes Letitia Wright, Shaun Parkes and Malachi Kirby.

Next, Lovers Rock revolves around a fictional story of young love at a Blues party in 1980, starring Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn, Micheal Ward, Shaniqua Okwok and Kedar Williams-Stirling, among others.

Red, White and Blue tells the true story of Leroy Logan, a young forensic scientist with a yearning to do more. When he sees his father assaulted by two policemen, he finds himself driven to revisiting his childhood ambition to become a police officer. With John Boyega and Steve Toussaint.

Premiering 22 December, Alex Wheatle follows the true story of award-winning writer Alex Wheatle (Sheyi Cole), from when he was a young boy through his early adult years.

Finally, Education is the coming-of-age story of 12-year-old Kingsley (Kenyah Sandy), who is fascinated by astronauts and rockets. When Kingsley is pulled to the headmaster's office for being disruptive in class, he discovers that he's being sent to school for those with "special needs".

Anchored by strong performances and brilliant writing, this anthology is a must-see for any cinema fan out there. Mark your calendars and make sure you give it a stream.
