It might look like a horror film, but Scream is actually a well-crafted whodunit with gory elements. That makes it appealing to a wider audience, though we advise against watching it alone especially if you're squeamish.

The action follows Sydney, a teen girl whose mother was murdered a year ago. She and her friends start to receive weird phone calls. It looks like a serial killer is terrorising the sleepy town of Woodsboro – one who has seen way too many scary films. No one is safe.

Gripping, fun and meta, Scream brought the horror genre to new heights upon its initial release in the 90s. It spanned multiple sequels and became a pop culture staple. Even better, it successfully stands the test of time.
