Agent Phil Coulson is back from the dead to give us Aussies our superhero fix.
When there's something strange in your neighbourhood, forget calling the guys with vacuum cleaners strapped to their backs. If you want to sleep soundly at night, you need to go to the professionals, and there's no one more professional than hard-edged Nick Fury and his elite organisation of intelligence operatives known as the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
In the wake of the cataclysmic Battle of New York between Loki and the Avengers, Fury tasks Agent Phil Coulson with assembling a top-notch team to investigate the rising number of supernatural incidents cropping up across the world. Between fighting Asgardian assassins and sabotaging the plans of the evil HYDRA organisation, Coulson and his team discover that S.H.I.E.L.D. is not quite as infallible as Fury believes. With the world's fate on the line, they might just have to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D. in order to save it…
First airing back in 2013 following the phenomenal success of The Avengers, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has just wrapped up its fifth season, with no signs of slowing down.; also, the release years are one ahead. Please start with Season 1 in 2003; I included a S5 copy in the NZ draft, it's available for dw on iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft.
Presumed dead in the wake of the Battle of New York, Agent Phil Coulson surprises everyone when he walks into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s headquarters very much alive and kicking. Never one for relaxing, Coulson quickly assembles a team of elite agents to tackle the spate of strange happenings popping up around the globe.
Consisting of Grant Ward, a straight-laced combat expert; Melinda May, an ace pilot and martial artist; Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons, genius scientists with eccentric personalities; and Skye, an inexperienced but incredibly talented computer hacker, the team has little time for exchanging pleasantries before they're thrust into a war with the Centipede Group, an offshoot of HYDRA led by the mysterious Clairvoyant.
Centipede's experiments involve transforming innocent civilians into volatile super-soldiers, and if the group manages to perfect the process, HYDRA will wield an army more powerful than even The Avengers. Coulson and his team will have to learn to work together fast if they're to foil the Clairvoyant's plan before it's too late.
Despite thwarting the Clairvoyant's plans, S.H.I.E.L.D. is in a bad state. Most of its agents are dead, working for HYDRA, or simply vanished. With Nick Fury gone, Coulson takes over as the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and sets about trying to restore the world's trust in the shamed organisation. Meanwhile, HYDRA presses its advantage, chasing down and recruiting more and more superpowered individuals to its side. Things go from bad to worse when HYDRA frames S.H.I.E.L.D. for an attack on The United Nations, leading to a schism within S.H.I.E.L.D. itself.
While S.H.I.E.L.D. is busy dealing with HYDRA, a new faction arrives on the scene. Dubbed the Inhumans, these half-human, half alien hybrids are the products of experiments conducted on ancient humans by the Kree. The Inhumans have no fondness for S.H.I.E.L.D., but Coulson and his team can’t let that stop them; they must find a way to bring the Inhumans into the fold before the world devolves into all-out war. Unfortunately, it might already be too late.
Still recovering from their war with Jiaying army of rogue Inhumans, Coulson and his team struggle to keep S.H.I.E.L.D. from falling apart. Simmons is MIA, Fitz is obsessed with unravelling the truth behind her disappearance and the entire team teeters on a knife's edge as they wait for HYDRA to make its next move.
However, the rest of the world refuses to lie dormant. An alien substance known as Terrigen begins to spread from city to city across the planet, awakening superhuman abilities in people unprepared to deal with the consequences. At the same time, more Inhumans are emerging every day, each just as unready to control their newfound powers. Splinter groups within HYDRA, the Inhumans, and even the government itself line S.H.I.E.L.D. up in their sights, forcing Coulson to again put his life on the line for a planet that doesn't even know his name.
Peace at last. S.H.I.E.L.D. has finally destroyed HYDRA, and with the passing of the Sokovia Accords, an international treaty regulating the treatment of enhanced individuals (ie, superheroes), it seems like the world might finally know a measure of stability. Trust in S.H.I.E.L.D. has been re-established, and Coulson takes the opportunity to step down as director and resume his role as a humble agent. Feeling more confident than he has in years, Coulson sets out to track down and recruit more Inhumans before their untrained powers get them and others hurt.
Not all Inhumans appreciate S.H.I.E.L.D.'s intervention, though. When Coulson and his team face the fiery Ghost Rider, they'll have to do more than talk to convince him to join their cause.
