Little Women (2019)

Year released

Drama, romance

Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on their own terms – is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen and with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbour Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Based on Louisa May Alcott's classic novel, Little Women tells the story of the four March sisters, each of them determined to craft a path in life that stays true to who they are. At the centre of the tale we have Jo, who reflects back and forth on her life and struggles to make it as a writer.

While there is no shortage of Little Women adaptations to choose from, this one stands out from the crowd thanks to its stellar cast and feminist undertones. Yet, the characters are what draw you in with their endless warmth and strong bond, each facing universal challenges a lot of us can relate to.
