The Australian Football League (AFL) is comfortably among the biggest and most widely supported competitions in a country that's mad about sport. While fans feel an affinity with their team via watching games, attending training sessions or scouring media reports, there are still facets to the AFL that are rarely seen by the public.

That is until now, thanks to the latest offering from Amazon Prime Video. Following on from the hugely successful The Test, an insight into the rebuilding of the Australian Test cricket team's culture, comes Making Their Mark.

Areas like locker rooms, a pre-match address from a head coach, intensely private family matters or discussions in the boardrooms of AFL clubs are normally strictly off-limits and fiercely protected. But the lid is being blown off those formerly private domains and more in this seven-part series.

Among the identities highlighted is the GWS Giants' young captain Stephen Coniglio. He was sensationally dropped from the team late in the 2020 season. Axing a captain is an extremely rare occurrence in the AFL. While it made headlines at the time, we get real insight into what really took place in Making Their Mark.

West Coast superstar Nic Naitanui, Adelaide's Rory Sloane, Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew and Richmond's senior leadership structure – coach Damien Hardwick, president Peggy O'Neal and chief executive Brendon Gale – also feature.

Carlton veteran Eddie Betts also appears and discusses, among other issues, the incidents of racism he has faced in his decorated career.

All of it takes place during a 2020 season that was interrupted in unprecedented fashion due to the coronavirus pandemic. "The reality is, this season will not look like any other," AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan says in a trailer for the documentary.
