A difficult watch at times, A Dangerous Son introduces three young boys and their respective families. Each of the boys is afflicted with serious emotional disturbances, which sends their parents scrambling to find treatment with little success.

Ethan has anger issues, Vontae writes disturbing letters and William is a teen on the autism spectrum. Throughout the documentary, the audience can see how the children behave on a day-to-day basis, but also how their families struggle to find solutions that might help the boys in the long term. Unfortunately, there aren't many options to choose from.

A Dangerous Son was directed by Liz Garbus, also responsible for acclaimed titles like The Farm: Angola, USA and What Happened, Miss Simone?

Released in 2018, the documentary is meant to draw attention to a broken healthcare system. It should also hopefully challenge current perceptions about the victims of mental illness and their families. Seeing a 10-year-old repeatedly hit his sister because he can't control his anger isn't something you will forget anytime soon.
