Where to buy Star Wars: The Force Awakens for less than six bucks

Alex Kidman 21 March 2016

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will shortly go on sale, and if you’re canny, you can pick up a digital copy for just $5.89.

Dendy Direct is running a promotion for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens where it will sell the seventh entry in the Star Wars series to own for only $5.89. Or in other words, one of 2015's biggest cinema hits to own for about the kind of price you'd typically pay for a movie rental.

That’s insanely cheap: What’s the catch?

Dendy is selling Star Wars: The Force Awakens via its Dendy Direct service, which offers movies and TV shows on a rental or digital ownership basis.

In order to qualify for the special pricing you’ve got to sign up for its "Dendy Loves" pricing via supplying your email address. The movie itself will be available on 1 April 2016 through the service.

Dendy Direct’s streaming service operates on Windows and Mac platforms via the Widevine player on a streaming basis only, as well as via Apps for Android and iOS devices. On mobile devices you can download for offline viewing, but not on PC or Mac platforms. There are restrictions on viewing if you’re overseas. For iOS owners with an Apple TV, it’s worth noting that Airplay is explicitly not supported, although Google's Chromecast and 2013 and later Samsung Smart TVs are supported.

The use of streaming also means that you need a reasonable speed connection in order to stream without buffering; Dendy recommends at least a 3Mbps connection for SD viewing or a 7.5Mbps connection for HD.

How does that pricing compare?

$5.89 is pretty darned cheap no matter which way you slice it, although as noted it’s for a streaming-only copy of the film. Here is how the pricing compares against similar digital and physical copies of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
