What’s the catch with Optus’ 10GB $40/month plan?

Optus’ latest SIM-only deal gives you 10GB a month to play with for only $40, but as always it’s sensible to read the fine print.

The newest SIM-only deal from Optus for mobile customers comes with the usual Optus trappings of unlimited calls and texts for use in Australia, as well as a healthy 10GB of data to use every month. 10GB of data for $40/month is a solid enough deal on its own even without the calling provisions thrown in for free.

So what’s the catch? There’s a couple of details to keep in mind. Firstly, it’s for a 12-month contract term, where Optus’ other SIM-only deals are available on a month to month basis. It’s also available only for new services, so if you’re already an Optus customer you’re not applicable for the deal.

It’s also only available until 4 January 2016, so you’d need to be relatively quick to take advantage of it. Optus indicates that after that date the likely cost of the plan will be $60 per month.

There’s an interesting contrast here with the equivalent plan on a month to month basis, simply because Optus is simultaneously running a deal where you get 50% off the monthly price for the first six months of the deal, making the monthly access price for the half-year only $35 per month.

Over a full twelve month span it would still be cheaper on the $40 plan, but for a shorter term you’d save money and have the flexibility to shift deals if you needed. Here is the rundown on Optus' other current month by month offerings:
