This dermatologist recommended brand has finally made its way to Australia. Here's what you need to know.
CeraVe is a cult skincare brand for a reason. It's the fastest growing skincare brand in the US. It's also the number one recommended brand by dermatologists for dry skin. And finally this award-winning brand has made its way to Australia – it's on the shelves of Chemist Warehouse right now.
But what is CeraVe? And how is this skincare brand different from the rest? While many skincare brands claim to be unique or different from the rest, CeraVe is a brand that actually appears to offer something different.
It's a brand all about going back to basics. You won't find labels like "anti-ageing" or claims like "ultimate reversal concentrate" on the bottles of CeraVe. This brand believes that healthy skin is good skin – and it is designed to reinforce or repair our skin's natural barrier. Devoid of irritants and fancy ingredients, CeraVe is a brand that has received more Seal of AcceptanceTM awards from the American National Eczema Association than any other brand.
How does it work? And what are ceramides?
The brand derives it's name from the word ceramide. Ceramides are lipids (or fats) found in your skin and ceramides specifically make up 50% of your skin's natural barrier. This layer of fats helps keep moisture in your skin, it protects your skin from wind and other elements, it creates a barrier against bacteria, dust, dirt, dish soap and any other nasties. So, it's bad news if your skin is low in ceramides.
People with depleted or low ceramides (like people with eczema or dry skin) open their skin up to the elements. Bacteria can get into the skin, wind can damage your complexion, dish soaps can irritate your hands and everything can become itchy, red and raw.
Dermatologist Dr Eleni Yiasemides explains: "We know that the skin's barrier function plays a crucial role in healthy skin, and this barrier is often compromised when we see skin conditions such as eczema and dry skin. Ceramides form an important part of the skin barrier function, as they make up part of the seal that keeps water in and irritants out. Ideally, a skin care formulation should not just protect the skin but also rebalance what may be missing from the skin."
CeraVe was created by dermatologists with this in mind. The brand is all about replacing and adding essential ceramides to fortify and protect your skin from irritants and the environment. The products are enriched with three key ceramides, fatty acids and other lipids to help repair and strengthen the skin's natural barrier. This is the secret to the brand's success. There's no added anti-ageing, anti-oxidant or plumping ingredients. CeraVe is all about sealing in all the goodness that's already in your skin.

Less is more in this instance and CeraVe is fragrance free, paraben free, made from non-irritating ingredients and is non-comedogenic (won't clog pores). So it's suitable for all skin types and perfect for eczema sufferers.
