6 styles that are perfect for short girls

Alright ladies, if you're a little vertically challenged then we have got you covered!

For those of us who struggle with height, you'll know the struggles from having to keep a good tailor’s number on hand and needing a wardrobe that compliments our small statures is a must. Regardless of what body shape you are, if you are under 5’5 there are a few guidelines you can follow that will both complement your petite frame and give the illusion of height and length to your body when needed.

1. Pointed Shoes

Whether they are with a heel or without, a pointed shoe will elongate the leg, giving the appearance of height. Matching your shoe to a pant or stocking (preferably in a dark tone) will also help lengthen your frame. However, try to avoid ankle straps as this will cut you off at the ankle.

2. High Waisted Pieces

High-waisted trousers will give the illusion of length. Tucking your shirt or blouse into a high waist will lengthen your lower half, giving you the illusion of height. A wide-leg structured pant or a-line midi skirt is a good style for shorter girls to wear and will give a taller silhouette. Accentuating the waistline with a statement belt on top of this can give the body definition as well as length.

3. Vertical stripes

It’s a no-brainer that vertical stripes give length to the body and can be incorporated with either bottoms or tops. Try a cigarette leg pant with a cinching paper bag waist or a collared boyfriend shirt in stripes.

4. Go monochrome

Of course all women tall or short know: when in doubt – wear all black. Staying with one colour creates a vertical line for your entire body and while black can be the go-to, there’s something to be said for bold block colours like red and blues to make a statement.

5. Shorts

High-waisted, low-waisted, whatever you prefer – short girls can wear shorts and the shorter the better! The only rule with these is to be wary of the cuffed hem as it breaks up the line of your legs and can shorten your frame.

6. Slim and skinny jeans

Unfortunately, as much it pains me to say, baggy boyfriend-style jeans are not a short girl’s friend. It’s better to go for a slim, skinny, even bootcut or straight leg jean because a looser fitting pair will make you look stumpy. One thing to always keep in mind is to either tailor jeans to the proper length or if you are especially short buy a cropped style to wear as full length. Jeans that drag along the ground and fray shorten your legs significantly.
