Portugal and Uruguay will go head to head in the second match of the knockout stages, in what promises to be an epic clash.

Portugal pulled off an exciting 3-3 draw with Spain in its World Cup opener and beat Morocco 1-0 in its second match. The team faced off with Iran next, a dramatic and tense encounter as Iran won over a lot of hearts with its showing at this World Cup before being eliminated.

The match was much more competitive than critics had predicted, with Iran putting up a good fight and almost pulling off a small miracle. Ricardo Quaresma scored a gorgeous goal for Portugal in the 45th minute and the team was awarded a penalty early in the second half, but Cristiano Ronaldo failed to convert. Iran got a penalty of its own in stoppage time, with Karim Ansarifard equalising for Iran. However, one point was enough for Portugal to advance, with the team finishing second in Group B.

Meanwhile, Uruguay topped Group A with three victories. It beat Egypt 1-0 in its opener and Saudi Arabia 1-0 in its second match. Its third encounter was with Russia, which had a surprisingly good run at the World Cup as well. However, Uruguay proved to be stronger, securing a clear 3-0 victory.

Luis Suarez scored first in the 10th minute, with Diego Laxalt following in his lead about 15 minutes later (technically an own goal by Denis Cheryshev). Then, Edinson Cavani scored for 3-0 in stoppage time. Russia was left with 10 men in the 36th minute which didn’t help its efforts, but it was clear that Uruguay was the better team.

Now, Cristiano Ronaldo and Co will take on Luiz Suarez and Uruguay in the knockout round, in what’s shaping up to be a pretty tight clash. The match will take place at Fisht Stadium in Sochi.
