For a show set in the '50s, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel feels surprisingly relevant today.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, created by the two minds behind the popular show Gilmore Girls, may be a period piece, but it tells a universal story. A housewife who seems to be living the perfect life is suddenly thrown off course when her husband leaves. Not only that, but she discovers a previously unknown talent for stand-up comedy, which takes her from her comfortable apartment to navigating New York nightclubs as she struggles to build a successful career. It’s a story about a woman finding her voice, which is just as relevant today as it was back in the 50s.
Miriam “Midge” Maisel is brilliantly portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan, but the entire cast, featuring Alex Borstein, Michael Zegen, Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub, is strong. The series is charming, fast-paced and funny, with amazing costumes and some serious feminist undertones. Plus, it has already won two Golden Globes and is nominated for 14 Emmys, so you know you’ll be in for a treat.
