Teams hoping to keep flickering finals chances alive meet when Newcastle play host to Canberra in Brisbane.

Knights vs Raiders is a battle of desperate teams. The Canberra Raiders are on a 3-game winning run and remain a finals chance as we near the pointy end of the NRL season.

They face the Knights in Brisbane in round 20, who also remain a live chance for a finals berth in 2021. This could be a classic.

When is Knights vs Raiders?

This match was originally scheduled to kick-off at 5:30pm AEST on Saturday 31 July. However, after the NRL was postponed yesterday due to Brisbane's snap lockdown the Raiders vs Knights will now play at the revised time Sunday 1 August at 1:50pm AEST. You can see the new NRL round 20 draw here.

Canberra's tough run

In their only other meeting in 2021, Newcastle scored 24 unanswered points in a second-half slaughter of Canberra. Ricky Stuart's Raiders were in a slump back then. They are a better team now.

Stuart lauded his team's "grit" and "will to win" after their 2-point win against the Eels last round, characteristics that were sorely missing in the round 9 loss to the Knights. Stuart will want more grit and will to win this week for this meeting has a lot on the line.

If the Raiders are any chance of making finals, this is a game they have to win. Even then, a win here guarantees nothing. Canberra's run home is monstrous. After the Knights, they face the Dragons (currently 8th), Melbourne (1st), Manly (6th), the Warriors (14th) and the Roosters (5th). Wins won't come easily.

Newcastle's run home is more favourable – the Knights meet teams in the lower half of the ladder in the last 6 rounds – but they are a game further back than the Raiders and a loss here could prove costly.

Both teams welcome back important soldiers in a game which promises to be a battle until the last minute. One to watch.

Update: We republished this article at 10:10am AEST Sunday 1 August with the revised schedule for Knights vs Raiders.
