Belgium and England will meet for the second time at the 2018 World Cup, following their clash in the group stage. On the surface, this may be a meaningless match that is little consolation for both teams after losing their chance to play in the final, but it will allow them to go out on a high note.

After a great run at the World Cup, Belgium lost to France in the semifinal in a match that proved just how effective the French defence is. Despite having 64% possession, Belgium didn’t manage to find the net, and some brilliant saves by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris didn’t make things better for the Red Devils either. Umiti scored for France early in the second half, a lone goal that was enough to send his team to the final. For the rest of the game, French defenders kept Belgium from threatening much, securing a deserved win for Les Bleus.

Meanwhile, England also had a hard time against Croatia in the semifinal, losing 1-2 after surrendering a 1-0 lead. England opened the scoring early in the 5th minute via Kevin Trippier, but Perisic equalised in the second half with a lovely finish off a cross. The two teams weren’t able to find the winner in regular time, so Croatia went on to play its third consecutive extra time match. However, the team somehow found the energy to keep up with the Three Lions and Mandzukic scored a brilliant goal for Croatia in the 109th minute, sending his team to the World Cup final for the first time ever. Football won’t be coming home for England this year, but at least the team has the chance to leave the tournament with their heads high if they manage to put up a good fight against Belgium.

Belgium and England already met in the group stage, when the Red Devils secured a 1-0 victory. The third place playoff match will take place at St Petersburg Stadium.
